i reckon 17's look good too- my favorite 17'' wheels are the audi fat 5's, highly polished... sooooooo nice.
and im sorry if i came across as harsh but "17 in is minimum for polo"- i reckon the polo would just look silly with 18 19 and 20 inch wheels.
but each to their own. plautos' car with 18's looks awesome in his track shots, and 17's seem to fit just right for many of the forum members cars.
i just like the idea of 15 inch wheels with 45 profile rubber, and the car sitting nice and low but tidy... kinda old school, i guess....
that being said, on the wheel size front, i realise in modern car fashion, im the minority....Last edited by Buller_Scott; 29-04-2009, 06:11 AM.

saw a gti yesterday with the Exor VW alloys, not sure if they are 17's or not but definetly look fair bit bigger then the stock ones. Car looked great while moving, very similar proportions to xr4 which i think looks awesome, made it heaps more aggressive though could have needed a little lowering.

Comfort
I think it comes down to comfort.
With the stock GTI suspension, the 16s were fine. With stiffer springs, the lower profile tyres can make the ride rough.
There are a lot of variables with new wheels and depending on your budget (always important to have one of these), there are a few options:
Basic: 16 / 17 rims with basic tyres to suit (the type of tyre they throw in with the package). guess this could be between 500 and 1500 depending on the rims
Med: Same rims with basic spring swap and proper tyres. Again depending on the rims, springs, tyres; between 1000 and 3000.
Full blown works: New suspension (springs, shocks, stops, links), Good rims and Great tyres; 3000 - 8000.
i'm sure there are plenty of other options like 2nd hand rims, other suspension or ride options, changing the rolling tyre size (need to reclock speedo / electronics), etc.
i'm sticking with the stock GTI rims and gone lower, this is fine for me, don't think I'd go lower profile with the springs i've got.
If you get big rims, cheap tyres and low / harsh springs, it will look great but will be horrible to be in (especially if you are the passenger).
Pick a budget, keep asking questions and see if someone will give you a ride in their car (looks like you've attracted plenty of attention, so should not be an issue) and have fun!

Hahaha, what colour are your wheels? And your grill pinstripe? And whatever else you've painted black. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd taken to your panelsOriginally posted by jasn78 View Postthat is vwgti's mate and yeah they are frickin nice even if the car is black lol

hey jess i think that if you value comfort above all else, you probably wouldnt want to go any larger than 16inch.
but i think that we might all be getting carried away abit.....
im pretty certain that many of this forum's members would like to see you get your car:
a) on alloy wheels
b) lowered
c) chipped
d) then dump pipe, front mount intercooler, etc etc
but i reckon the best advice really is to just hold off for a few months, just get to know your car- learn how the diesel engine works, learn your optimal shift points in every gear, learn how the car handles etc etc, so that bit by bit, you can decide for yourself which aspects of the car you want to improve, based on your budget at that particular time.
then, you can post on here and ask for advice and there will be plenty of informative, useful and knowledgable replies and advice.
if you're going to replace wheels, you'll have to replace tires as well and its only a few more dollars to get good, safe, sticky tires rather than the crap el-cheapo tires that may come in those $800 packages.
good luck!Last edited by Buller_Scott; 30-04-2009, 11:24 PM.
