Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Answer (1 of 5): Not very often at all, in fact very rarely will you need to replace spark plugs yourself. In the past, spark plugs were changed generally every 30,000 miles, or when there was an issue with the car which could relate to wear on the spark plugs. This however is no longer the case; modern cars are designed to require far less maintenance especially in terms of wear and tear. It is therefore not generally necessary to change them yourself. If, when a car is serviced, spark plugs appear to be worn they will be changed, this is likely to be frequent enough. Usually this will occur every 80,000 - 90,000 miles, although they can last even longer. Spark plugs very rarely experience any problems other than wear which is easily diagnosed and remedied. It is always worth asking your garage when they service your car just to check the general condition of your spark plugs, especially when you are reaching 80,000 miles. If you drive an older car, they may need to be changed more often; in this case there are a number of tell tale signs which can indicate worn spark plugs, including;- Changes in the overall performance of a car- Increased fuel consumption- Above normal emission figures- Increased noise in the carIf you notice any of these problems, you could either change the spark plugs yourself or take the vehicle to your garage and ask them to check the spark plugs. In essence, it is unlikely you will ever need to change spark plugs as they last a long time, and when they are becoming worn it can be done during the car's routine service.

thats 60000 miles too in that article which is 100000k's

Deals charge you 150 to change them. Even tho the plugs are 15 dollars each from ngk direct exact same ones. And they change them twice within the normal amount for 1 set

              60,000km Check Up??

              Hi folks,

I'm driving a 2007 Golf 2.0 TDI with 55,575 kms and just looking to query anyone about my 60,000km check up [here in Brisvegas]. The VW dealership at Newstead quoted me $1000 - can this be correct?

              Thanks

Go to an independent VW specialist ... dealers are just waiting to bend you over.

have you seen the plugs at 60,000KM??? their **** house... the VW branded plugs are just NGK's anyway... if your keen enough/confident.. do your own plugs around 60k or just say you dont want them done at 60.. its completly up to you.. the service adviser will strongly suggest you do have them done at the recommened service interval and if you dont want to void any warranties just do them.. thats my thought on it.
