Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Aircon Woes

Apologies for yet another aircon thread....

After seemingly humming along with the aircon fan on the "2" setting, my aircon all of a sudden died. Not only does the aircon light go out, but i am left with just vent air only (so no fan) for settings 1 thru to 3. However setting 4 (full blast) has not only fan but also AC, so I'm left with full blast or nothing at all.

I've cracked open the fuse box, and from what i can tell, both fuses that deal with the Climatic are both in full working order.

So my question is, Is there something else I can check myself, or that I have missed, before i find my nearest AC Specialist for my just out of warranty '06 GTI?

    Thanks

    Simon

Unless the blower has electronic speed control it sounds like the blower resistor pack has failed. The fan speed switch selects different resistors in series with the blower motor to change the speed. At max speed the resistors are switched out of the circuit so that is how it is possible to have max speed but none of the others.

The resistor packs can have to dissipate significant heat so they are normally fitted in the airstream just after the blower to cool them. I think the resistor pack also has a thermal link for protection. So it is probable either the thermal link or the resistor for speed 3 has failed (as it is also in the circuit for speeds 1 and 2).

      Resistor pack

As above sounds like the resistor pack has blown, contact your dealer if the vehicle is just out of warranty they should be able to put a good will request in for you at worst you'll have to pay for labour. My Gti suffered numerous AC woes while under warranty, 1 control module which is the switch pack, 2 compressors, 1 condensor. Are you in Sydney? I have friends at Barloworld Five Dock if it helps.

I had exactly the same happen to my car 4 days after I picked it up. The A/C had dumped its refrigerant out of its system though the Evaporator/TX valve area, and I had this replaced under warranty.

Thanks this makes sense as it is indeed only speed 4 that works.

I'll contact the dealer, I may have an extended warranty, however my dealer isn't exactly close. i live in Campbelltown and i picked the car up at Gosford, so Five Dock looks like a more viable option.

          Thanks

Simon, you can take it to any dealer you like, just took mine to highway to get aircon and boot solenoid fixed all under warranty even though brought it at Austral.

Thanks, I'll be contacting the dealer more, as I have recently discovered I have the "Extended warranty" thing that I completely forgot about. If discussions fail, i'll take to another dealer close by.

              Thanks

Nah, Black with honeycomb grills, and the gloss B's, and of course a vwwatercooled.org.au sticker...

Back on topic, i'll be able to get this fixed under the "extended warranty", after the dealer found it in their system.
