Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

lots of guys here had the same problem as me in regards to the gearbox - going from 1st to second it has a tendency to start grinding as if theres no syncromesh between those two gears - they normally fix it under the warranty of the car and if its serious enough they usually replace the entire gearbox depending on whereabout in the world you are

its been rumored that the main cause of this grinding/crunching was the usage by VW of synthetic gearbox oil and changing the oil sorts out the problem - but in my case they dropped the gearbox and replaced some internal parts as well since it seems like a common problem - when mine went in there were around 6 gti's in the waiting line suffering from an identical problem

if it really was the oil then im sure by now you wont encounter that issue cos im sure they will have changed the spec of the oil they use ...... but im sure theres a sticky topic here somewhere about the issue
