  • Damn gearboxes

This is how my Polo left me on my camping holiday at Wye River on the Great Ocean Rd on Saturday.

Went for a blat with a mate inland and while he was driving it got stuck in 5th. It has been doing it for the last couple of months (reported it to the dealer at last service) but this time it got extra stuck. Had to drive from Forrest back to Wye river in 5th gear the whole way. Slow people made it more difficult than necessary. I reckon for about 5km I used no throttle coming down the mountain, but had to brake lots because i was actually going faster coasting in gear than the people in front of me.

Also noticed as the Polo was being loaded on to the truck that it's dumped a lot of gearbox oil all over the passenger side front wheel, so the failure is looking fairly catastrophic.

I should find out more about what has happened tomorrow when the dealers are open.

yea mine got stuck in 3rd... kept telling the dealer about it and they effectively called me a blatant liar straight to my face. So You can imagine how smug I was when I walked in there after they fixed it. So I can totally imagine how you feel right now.

Mine the selector mechanism shat itself. It has stopped crunching into second, I reckon I've worn enough of the teeth away now.

New box if the oil is on the outside. Jmac had one recently.

I wonder what happened to the VW factory tech responsible for deciding to use synthetic gear box oil in the first place???

Redline MTL is synthetic, but has poly. Yep without looking at that i would say a diff pin has sheared and speared itself through the casing.
Depending how long it was driven it willbe a new tranny.
              Cheers

Anywhere up to 50km. We were probably past Forrest but I can't really remember. It happened in the middle of nowhere in a spot with no phone reception and not many opportunities to pull over.

I'd prefer a new gear box over a new tranny though

Yes still under warranty. Will be two in late March. I'm not too worried about it, i'm more pissed off at the ******** attendant at BP in Lorne that told me that the squeegies are "for washing the windscreen only and not the entire car" (i was cleanning my side windows at the time so i could, i dunno, SEE OUT OF THEM), and that i was blocking traffic and to move my car (i was parked at the side of the servo specifically so that other people could get in and out, and the whole 4 minutes i was there not a single person actually went to leave.

Oh damn, what crappy timing for that to have happened. Here's hoping she's up and running again real soon.

The latest word is that a bolt that is to do with fifth gear has fallen out (i think he said it was for the selector but i can't remember exactly) and that they were pulling the gearbox out to see what other damage has been done.
