  • Rear muffler? More power or just noise?

    Background...

My car has APR V1 program, FMIC, APR Dump pipe/Cat, SEAT intake, BMC filter, Diverter Valve... She goes alright..

I changed rear muffler today, stainless 2.5 inch straight through design and big tip on it..

    This is my first impressions...

    Noise:

At idle there is a slight increase in noise, a slightly bit deeper. You will definately know there is a non stock muffler fitted. I had the exhaust shop fit the biggest muffler they could to minimise sound drone. IT JUST FITS. (Had to remake bracket)

Driving there is no drone at all, very nice. As revs rise so does noise, it gets pretty noisy right up in the rev range.. So the noise is only there at higher revs, its very progressive with revs as they rise.

    Power:

I think the car feels a little but faster. Obviously it wouldnt have added a great deal of kw but I really feel it has a little more punch.. Im trying to ignore the sound and give a fair assessment of any power increase but it fels good.. Feels good from 80-120km/h, overtaking on the freeway etc..

Does anyone have any real data whether a rear muffler in conjunction with dump pipe upgrade actually adds any more power or torque than dump pipe alone??

If anyone wants any pics it just looks fantastic..

There has been a bit of a consensus that upgrade of the exhaust minus the dump pipe doesn't give a huge amount of power. However the dump pipe alone is 10-15kw or so.

Was this a customer rear muffler or pre-made, if pre-made...who made it Lukey? etc...etc...I didn't think there were many options out there?

Thanks heaps..I also have APR DP and HFC

I read somewhere that only round mufflers fit in the back..

thats Bull*hit, Mine is a regular rectangle sports muffler.. There are more options than you think.. It was not easy to fit, had to remake a bracket as it hits on the standard bracket. I put the biggest size I could as I wanted to minimise drone and noise.. NO DRONE at all..

Its a little deeper at idle and as revs build definately gets louder than original but overall VERY HAPPY. Much much better note to original.. Can hear turbo spool up so much more too.

If anyone is in sydney area and wants to inspect or look at it or come for a spin, PM me..

Otherwise I will post up pics tonight.. Looks awesome in my view..

Looks pretty sweet . So is it full 2.5" system from the cat or did you just change the rear muffler but leave the stock piping?

                            Where'd you get it done?
                            Cheers,

                            John

Car has APR downpipe and cat.. and only rear muffler 2.5 inch straight through.. Rest of piping is stock, but its 2.25inch and stainless the stock pipe, no need to change it. Even the exhuast guy said waste of time changing the pipes... they flanged it up all nice incase I change my mind and put the rest of the pipe work, but I wont, It sounds tough and goes harder than before..

Done at Liverpool exhaust. Not cheap but the job was done first rate. took them 2 hours to fit it properly as its VERY TIGHT FIT, remake bracket, make sure it dont hit nothing
