  • Wrecked Polo GTI

Anyone know how one tracks down a GTI at the wreckers? Is there a central database or is it a matter of a lot of phone calls?

I may need some motor ancillaries

Are u looking for wrecks or parts off wrecks? If u just want parts u have to ring up each individual wrecker but if u want a whole car there are auction sites such as pickles or manheimfowles which u can preview pics online.

What he said...What have you done? I know Golf Loon has a wrecked Polo 1.6 at his workshop.

Due to an apparently minor front end bingle I need about $5,000 of parts (alternator, radiator, various brackets, etc...) which is not going to be an insurance job (a long and embarrassing story), so I'm looking for other avenues other than new genuine from the dealer.

Jimmy (God love him) is on the case also.

Anyone know of a GTI in a wreckers (Brisbane based - but willing to look further afield).

          Ever need a new alternator? - $1,500

Interesting - I'm sure Jimmy will know what parts are standard on all Polo's.

            Thanks for that.

Ok...I have to add that that car has no front end on it, it was bought to fix an accident similar to yours...But the engine was in tact last I saw, and the car had only just over 6,000km on it...Was rolled in an accident. I have seen it first hand, and the engine and bay looks fine...You may be able to get the alternator off it if they are shared.

Another possibility is to ask auto parts suppliers if they carry the correct alternator, radiator etc.

A long time ago I had an old Alfa Berlina (great car to drive, terrible cat to own). I was quoted $2,400 for a new starter motor as an Alfa spare (on a car worth less than $2,000 in total ! ), but I bought a Bosch one from an auto electrician for $250 (exact same part number).

I've seen about 3-4 polo GTI wrecks on the auction sites, most with rear end damage. Check here on the following, I have not been on for a while though:

Buying or selling, Manheim has everything you need under one roof. Auctions across Australia feature used cars, government cars, damaged cars, trucks, machinery & motorcycles.

Wide range of car auctions in Australia. Buy, sell used cars, trucks, trailers, government cars, damaged cars, machinery, oil and gas equipment at Pickles.

I think those were my exact words when I looked at the quote - and then I saw a host of other doohickeys all with $400, $200, $600 sort of figures.

Quite frightening when you toss and turn over spending a $150 on an intake.
