  • Single DIN conversion for Polo GTI

    Hi All,

I am wondering what parts are needed (and part numbers + where to buy) to change my stock head unit to a single din version.

I have already searched the forum (before anyone mentions it ) and I have found minimal info.

Sofar it looks like I need:

CANBUS adaptor (part# and where to buy?)
Antenna booster (part# and where to buy?)
Single DIN conversion kit (part# and where to buy?)

Is there anything I've missed? I'm hoping someone can help as I've noticed a few of you have already done this conversion.
    Cheers,

    John

Here's one I prepared earlier for quick serving :

You'll also need the 4 keys to remove the stock head unit safely, some have used jigsaw blades instead and that seemed to have worked but that might scratch it if you're not careful.

Everything including the head unit itself were all bought from eBay. But DO NOT buy the stock radio removal tools or the CANBUS adaptor or anything else from this seller called Autoware302, slowest, poorest service I've ever come across.

No such thing as a single DIN conversion kit per se, to fill the hole I bought a generic DIN-sized tray from Strathfield Car Radio. However, there's this seller on eBay called Vagteam2 that sells a similar item but is supposedly a genuine VW unit which is velour-lined on the inside, but for US$29.99 + shipping I wouldn't bother.

Awesome. Thanks for that. This thread didn't come up in my search.

If you want a perfect fit for the pocket, order a genuine one from VW. We could never get those generic ones to sit flush with the rest of the trim.

        Part # 6Q0 857 058A 1QA for pocket & 6Q0 858 167A B41 for rubber insert. Not cheap though, paid $82 for the pocket alone.

when i bought my car 2nd hand it had an aftermarket single DIN head unit and generic brand plastic pocket (looks excatly like roodosutaa's one). the pocket sits flush on mine and has never moved.

Mine doesn't actually sit flush, it rattles a bit. There are two kinds, the cheap one ($12, which I bought) and a more expensive one (I think about $20) which comes with some fitting accessories to adapt the pocket to your car.

I didn't really mind cos the original plan was to put a DIN panel there for a boost gauge and oil pressure (hence mounting the head unit in the bottom), but now that they've released an air vent gauge holder in the UK (like the stock look) and I couldn't be arsed with an oil pressure gauge, I think I'll go for that and get a pocket that fits properly.

@[-Polo GTI-] - why was I the reason for your edit....?

No it's useless. All you need is a pocket, plus harness (CANBUS or not, up to you) and keys if you want to make installation easier.
