  • Weird humming noise

Two days ago I noticed a humming noise that seemed to be coming from the back of the car.

The noise isn't really noticeable until i hit about 70+, it does get a little louder as i get faster, but its more the frequency of the hum that changes as i get faster.

Now i'm assuming its something to do with the axle or wheels, as i can clutch and coast, or even turn the car off and the noise remains. It doesn't sound bad, but its different... has anyone heard of anything similar before?

I do have some alignment + vibration issues but have for a while, so i think its unrelated.

Could be your tyres, especially if they have worn with a "sawtooth" pattern (run your hand over the tread and see if the trailing edge of tread blocks are higher than the leading edge). Wheel (axle) bearings is another possible explanation.

Yep scalloped tyres by the sounds , run your hand around the inside and outside edges of the tyres and you may feel the high spots of the saw toothing. Bring it round and ill have a listen mate

+1 for Rear Bearing... Lift rear of car and see if the back wheels have movement.

either undo retaing clip and retighten or repack and tighten. If after tightening the sound is still there replace bearings.

Rear bearings. My Polo had the same noise, and the bearings were found to be scored and pitted.

Not ruling out bearings , just know that scalloping is common. Checks on both easy done though

Rear right bearing was replaced today under warranty.

Only 7 months left on warranty... looks like i'm going to be paying for stuff soon.
