  • Knocking noise coming from the front....suspension? engine mount?

    Hey all,

Just today I have noticed a rather loud knocking noise coming from the front whenever I go over even a small bump. Any ideas what this might be?

I was thinking either the suspension or engine mount but I not long ago had the APR engine mount insert installed.

Cheers in advance for any helpful info!

    Rhys

May be a suspention knock...I get this sometimes too, and it annoys the ***** out of me. Although I don't think it is the torque arm, it may pay to get under there with a 16mm socket and breaker bar, and see how tight the 3 bolts are...If they are loose, treat them to some locktite thread locker. That will fix them.

Mine did this after being lowered... I've had a look for anywhere the dust has rubbed off for hitting, but I can't see anything.

Does it happen at high or low speed? Mine happens at <10km/h, above that no probs.

mine is still stock suspension and yeah only seems to be at low speeds. if it keeps happening i'll have a look underneath at the bolts.

Don't know about Polos, but Golfs seem to suffer from loose or worn anti roll bar fittings and bushes sometimes.

FYI Rhys, there's another Polo in Brisbane with a simular problem but happens on takeoff, which was diagnosed as being the front swaybar from memory.

I get terrible knocking from my front suspension over the smallest bumps... I am getting it looked at in my 40,000km service and will not be taking the car back until it's fixed...

To make sure I am going to take a new demo for a drive and see if it has the same sounds

check all the bolts suspension related.

then disconnect the swaybars and see if it still happens.

                    then check engine mounts.

                    then check strut tops.

at least thats the order i'd start eliminating in.

can you hear whereabouts in the engine bay its coming from?

Sounds like the sway bar links mate. Try a quick round the block with them off and it wont do any harm, that will nail it for sure.
                      Cheers

I could've sworn mine was coming from the top of the front strut. Very suspension-kinda-knock-thunk sound. I was going nuts trying to figure it out. Took my dealer 2 days to find it, and another day to fix it once the parts were in stock. I was guessing bottom arm, or subframe mount or something.

Mine didn't happen with more than just me on board, either. Only with one person driving and no passengers.

Rather than have an argument with a dealer over swaybar mounts how hard is it to change yourself?
