  • Premium unleaded premium?

    Hi all,

I just filled up before the inevitable price rise, and noticed my local Caltex/Safeway are now charging a 13c premium for 98RON unleaded on top of the standard advertised ULP price, up from being 11c extra last week and 10c extra a few weeks back.

Is this the same all around, or is this particular servo being dodgy? I know BP put it up to 11c a while back seemingly across the board so I waved goodbye to them.

Is Shell/Coles still only an extra 10c?

I know it's only a few cents here and there, but it certainly feels like those with cars tuned for 98RON petrol are the ones being gouged currently.

    Cheers!
    PogoAmy.

      Iy.
i remember when premium was 1.50 and regular 1.42- 8c more. so at these prices the % differnece is much higher. no doubt they're gouging us !

OK, so it would seem that they're all 13c then.

And the softcock ACCC tries to tell us there's no collusion going on between these companies...

        Thanks for the replies.

        Cheers!

just before the price hike i noticed premium was about a 7c/L over unleaded (i only use BP). a few weeks back as prices started to drop i noticed that BP Ultimate was about 20c/L higher than regular unleaded, that's criminal. it is just to keep the majority happy whilst the rest of us using diesel and premium still have to suffer.

have a look at this thread a few weeks back where this has been discussed - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ighlight=cents

This is simply not true. The retail margin for fuel products are between 0 and 3 c/L for ULP, and around 4 to 9 c/L for PULP, and 98RON. Diesel usually enjoys a margin of around 15 to 18 c/L on account of the lower volume sold.

Refinery margins however, are usually much MUCH fatter.

As far as i am aware.. They pay 27 cents. Then get charged all the tax and what not ontop of it. Causing it to get higher. But they still have a large profit?

(i'm not entirely sure about what im on about. But that is what ive been told from more then 1 person.

I've heard many many times that the retail margin on fuel is 0-3 cents.

I've said many times in response that that is utter B/S.

NO-ONE in their right mind goes into business knowing there is no gross profit, let alone net profit, and no wages.

The start-up costs of a service station, I imagine, would be more than $1, and the operating costs would also be more than $1 per week.

So, the margin is MUCH MORE than 0-3cents.

You can believe what you like, but them's the figures (in major cities anyway). This is why there is such a push for you to purchase other items at the servo - there's more profit there than in the fuel.

Besides, most fuel stations as we know it aren't family businesses. They are large (multi)national companies eg BP, Mobil, Caltex Woolworths and Coles Express. Low margins at retail level don't bother these companies at all. They make money off you elsewhere - BP and Mobil at the refinery level, and Woolies and Coles at their supermarkets.

The fact of the matter is, fuel always has been, and always will be a low margin, high volume business.

Petrol stations make a lot of their $$$ from shop sales assoicated with the fuel and not the fuel itself (about 1-2c/l)...

This comes from a former service station employee

You have swallowed the rhetoric which has been dished out for years and years.

You don't seriously believe big companies don't care about profits in any or all of their cost centres???? You are dreaming.

You can't seriously believe someone would make a capital investment of millions to open a service station to sell a few Mars bars and icecreams.

What employer shows an employee the heart of their business? Not one large employer would show a service station cash collector the ins and outs of his operation.

I don't doubt that the invoice the station gets shows a low margin, but the invoice for the fuel delivery is available for all to see so they can keep feeding the "no profit" B/S.

I don't buy the 0c gross margin any more than I buy the ACCC's assurance that we aren't gouged.
