Pessimistic Fuel Guage??

I think I need to start recording how many litres it takes to fill my car up because my fuel gauge is beyond messed up.

On a full tank I drove 80km, parked for an hour, came back and noticed the needle had dropped between the 3/4 and full line. Yesterday, I drove 125km with no stops. Checked it this morning, and the needle is just a touch down from the full line.

Yet when I hit 1/4 mark and the fuel light comes on, that needle will hit 0 like there is a leak in the tank.

You are better off looking at the fuel consumption. How many L/100km is it doing?

It's currently doing 10.3L/100km -- So is this the most accurate way to calculate my fuel usage?

I know you shouldn't believe everything you hear, but my old mechanic reckons DTE and such are just very rough estimates.

My TDI doesn't have a DTE but in the manual says when the fuel light comes on there is 7L left in the tank. Therefore, being a 45L tank, I should be able to put 38L in on the fuel light? I've never been able to cram in more then 36L when the fuel light comes on.

are you talking the 1.8T Polo GTI? Either you have an extremely heavy foot and drive it at 10/10ths daily, you drive through lots of traffic or you have something wrong with it. Over a week or two I average 8L/100km and daily can average between 6.8-7.8L/100km.

I hope not. I did ask a VW service guy about these high numbers, he said all new cars are not very fuel efficient while they still have the running in engine oil. After my 15,000km service, I'm due to see better numbers... apparently.

Only BP Ultimate or Mobil 8000.

ahh yours is a brand spanker, well then I hope thats true in your case.

I don't recall mine being that high, however when you first get it I don't blame you for such a high fuel consumption

i wish mine was at that level! i average around 10L/100km. yes i drive spiritedly.....but certainly not flat out all the time. i drove to brisbane on the weekend (about 45 mins motorway driving) with no A/C on and cruise control on, and by the time i pulled off the motorway in brisbane my readout was at 7.8L/100km. mine never really gets any lower than that. i've noticed though that V2 uses noticeably more fuel than V1.

mine is an late '06 model with 40,000k's on the clock
