Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Front Anti-Roll Bar "Lateral Locks"

Have just fitted a White-line front anti-roll bar to my Polo GTI and having an issue with the Lateral Locks supplied with the kit.
These locks that are supposed to stop the bar moving too much don't actually fit as they hit the sub-frame and get squished as you tighten up the roll bar mounts. These cant fit on either side of the anti-roll bar bushes.

Do we need to run the lateral locks on our cars?
Has anyone used or made anything to lock the upgraded anti-roll bar in place?

I'll try to explain how my front antiroll bar is laterally locked. If it doesnt make sense then i'll look for pics. I have a custom 24mm front bar so any lateral locks that will clam around that actually touch against the steering tie rods/arms at certain steering angles, so I couldn't use anything like that. The guy I bought the car off had just used hose clamps which while that appeared pretty rustic, worked perfectly well. To get that to where I was happy, I made a couple of changes. You know how P-clamps have a rubber lining, well if you get a couple of those that match the WIDTH of the hose clamp you'll use, just fit their rubber lining to the hose clamp and cut them to a length where they'll surround the FARB nicely when tightened. So these normal hose clamps now with rubber lining will tighten onto the bar outside of the bush mounts. All you have to do is position them flush with the bushes. The shoulder of those P-clamp linings which is square will sit alongside the square side of the bar bushes. Orient the the hose clamps worm drive mechanism in a position where it remains clear of fouling on the subframe, bush bracket or bush itself as the bar rotates through its natural range (which isn't much). For me that was towards the rear of the car. Just check once you're happy that the hose clamp tail isn't so long that it'll contact anything and if so snip it off. Its a compact, silent and virtually zero cost way to do it.

Oh and a tiny schmear of bush grease on the outside surfaces of those bush shoulders that'll be rubbing ensures they last and stay silent.

I pretty much did the same thing except I trimmed the old sway bar bushes and hose clamped them. Thought it looked a bit rough but haven't had any issues.
Was kinda wondering if there was some other way someone's done but if that's worked for you I'll keep it how it is.
