no it wasn't designed to but it seemed to slide right into that spot. think what you want of jeremy clarksons reviews but even he said the Polo GTI is the true successor of the old Golf GTI. he says the mk4/mk5 GTI's are just a fat Polo.

C'mon now.. Every GTI made by VW has just been a shopping trolly hatchback with a bigger motor, stiffer springs and fatter tyres bolted on. Lets not get into design philosophy here
