Just a comparison my r32 averages around 16 lt/100 and around the city it has gone up to around 23lt/100, considering buying a polo GTI

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just to add. I've done just over 500km in my GTI & average 8.5-9.0L/100km on my trips so far (combined Hwy/city).
Interesting to see if it changes over time as the car gets worn in, or when I change fuel types.MY16 MK7 Golf GTI

mid 7 to mid 8's depending on mix of highway and stop start. I do find these cars chew on fuel when leaning on the throttle so 10's shouldn't surprise if driving around town.Track Car: 06 Polo GTI Red Devil mkII

Hi all,
I thought I'd try a little test with my GTi and drive it conservative on a full tank (which was quite painful!) to see what consumption I would get compared to what I would get driving it normal (normal meaning having a bit of fun!) After driving on a full tank quite conservative I didn't really get much of an improvement at all! I still got around 450-500km. So I will be going back to the old way I drove for sure!Polo GTi Hatch

I've been doing my own bit of testing for quite some time and I've found changing gears at 2700rpm gives me the best fuel economy. Much like barra240t, I've discovered driving conservatively (changes between 2000 and 2500rpm) vs spirited showed almost no discernible difference in consumption.sigpic

fella's, I flog the living guts out of my TDI EVERYWHERE and get 6l/100km hahahaha
and I get a poorly 5.2-5.4/100 on the highwayVW: it aint just a car, its a way of life

Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a newer Polo GTI bought late last year, after it had around 5000thou on it, it started getting figures around the 6-8l/100 mark.
From my fathers to my house (~ 2 hours, some suburbia and a lot of highway, from eastern melb to beyond western melb I can get (in both directions) ~ 6.3L/100 average (lowest I ever saw) with no A/C use... ~6.7 with A/C use. Driving from my house to my mums (~3.5-4hours into south western Vic) I normally see ~7.3 (no A/C)... given this has alot more stuffing around in little towns (oh and don't forget the required lead foot passing of those not doing the proper 100kms/h by GPS speed limit), and worse roads I can understand the increase. These were non-chipped figures. I don't know If I was lucky with my tune, or the newer cars are getting slightly better maps? I do run "economy" tire pressures (40+ on this car) as I have always done on my (limited collection of) cars... I am VERY happy with these figures as my previous car which was a 950kg hatchback from a cheaper brand from year2000 and used to get about 6.5-8L/100 depending on the AC usage and the direction of the wind!! The Polo seems to suffer less with wind, and A/C use, although I have had worse figure driving to mums when we have had 50-80km+ winds coming head on (not to mention having to dodge downed tree limbs and almost making the GF cry doing so!) (I swear her cornering is far scarier than my dodging!)
Long distance figures are helped Lots for me by the cruise too, I can't get those sort of figures with my foot...
During my work to home commuting (8kms) I still see ~8.5l/100 for the week... this might be due to the fact the car doesn't see any proper use as its only really warm by the time I get to work...
I recently tried a new method of driving also which someone had stated on the forums that they had seen demonstrated on VWs Germany site, which involves using very low RPM, and changing gears at ~2000rpm... I have noticed that more throttle can be used with similar fuel figures (although its not "faster") I tried this as they said VW recommends low RPM with WOT, where as I though I had been taught that WOT was BAD for fuel economy, but this was in regards to carbies... maybe EFI negates this...
My 2 cents
