  • What's that noise? (Tell me what's happening)

"Why should you wanna know..... "

When I picked up my car, I had a lot of questions. Mainly what were all these noises and were they normal. Searching the forums lead to a few answers, but I soon realised that everyone describes the noises they hear differently as well as where they think they're coming from.

So I though it might be a good idea if we had a thread dedicated just for noises. I think this will really help the new members understand what's going on with their car a bit better. It might even stop them freaking out thinking that something under the hood is having an electrical malfunction when the engine is off.

The way I think this could work would be, someone reports a noise. If others have the same noise or knows exactly what it is, they can post their answer. If no one knows what the described noise is, then the person can assume that it's not normal and take it back to the dealer/mechanic.

Just to get things rolling, here's a noise I picked up on last week.

    LOCATION: Underneath car, transmission area.
    SOUND: Clunks and rattles
WHEN/HOW IT OCCURS: If I coast over a speed hump with the clutch held in. It sounds like the transmission is rattling around. Also, if I then dump the clutch I'll hear a clunking noise. Only happens in 2nd at a low speed.

LOCATION: Passenger side. Lower door, wheel arch area. Hard to locate precisely
    SOUND: Squeaking
WHEN/HOW IT OCCURS: Whenever I accelerate, I'll hear a squeaking noise. It sounds like one of two things. Either it's the car body flexing from take off and causing the rubber seals on the door to rub against the inside painted area. Or something to do with whatever forces act on the wheel under acceleration.

Just started hearing this one today. Very annoying.

      LOCATION:Behind the peddles drivers side
      SOUND: Clunk
WHEN/HOW IT OCCURS: From cold start as soon as you hit 1500rpm then never again till the car has been off for at least 8 hours.

LOCATION:Behind the clutch peddle to the left
      SOUND: Clink/rasp
WHEN/HOW IT OCCURS: as you engage/disengage the clutch in any gear or rev, intermittent more obvious in APR tune than in stock.

No detriment aside from the noises and haven't gotten worse since I first heard them.

I'm assuming this happens when you're moving in 1st? If so, you'll notice it's actually to do with the speed of the car (ie. ~20km/h)

I've been told this has to do with the auto door locking feature. Even though you might not have it active (i don't either) but it still makes the noise.

It's certainly more pronounced on a cold start, but if you listen carefully, I'll even hear it ever so the next time I get in after it's been parked and locked.
