Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi, Im new to GTI POLO

    Hi,

Just UPGRADED from a XR6 turbo and Ford V8 to a Polo Gti.

I sold the other cars as they were ridiculous.. V8 chews so much fuel and doesnt go as good as it should for the petrol it consumes and the XR6 turbo used to break things every time you put the foot into it (gearbox, diff)..

So Ive upgraded by selling these cars to find a mint condition GTi Polo in black magic with leather interior, 11,000km 07 model $22,000.

Its also been fitted with the APR tune so it goes ok.. Anyhow just want to say hi, looking forward to learning as much as possible about these little beasts..

Yet another Ford convert! Welcome mate. That's quite a change.

If I was to hazard a guess I would assume the XR6T was a BA with a 4-speed auto? If you were busting the diff and box you must've had a few upgrades..

    What model was the V8?

      True. It is an upgrade.

Excellent choice of car and especially colour

It sounds exactly like mine... 11000kms, black, leather APR

congrats on the purchase mate and you are true in saying its an UPGRADE.

the power to weight ratio after being chipped is great in these cars once chipped, as you will have found out already, and you don't have to worry about the huge cost of fuel.

            Cheers mate,
            Rhys

              Hi,

XR6T has 320rwkw, used to kill the old 4 speed box, burnt clutches every 5 minutes.

V8 was an old EL Fairmont wheezer..

The Polo is great, Stop start acceleration is very good but more impressive is part throttle response, boost comes on so early.. Just cruising around and tap the throttle and it just likes to charge forward..

Its like the little Polo always has gund loaded ready to throw a punch..

XR6T had big lag but used to come on like a cricket bat to the back of the head..

On our roads you just dont need more power than a Polo Gti with APR... Very nice drive..

I might get the downpipe done but thats about it...

The Mrs took it for a spin as I had to return a friends car that I borrowed. She loved it... Couldnt believe how responsive it was.. Thought she was jumping nto a hyundai getz... she didnt want to let me drive it after that..

Congrats on the GTI Polo... nice car. I am a little puzzled that you didn't expect a 320rwkW XR6 Turbo to break the standard BTR M97LE - they cannot take that much power. Part of the reason the FPV GT was so much slower before they got the 6-speed ZF 6HP26 is because Ford was not confident in the M97LE's capability to withstand the GT's 520Nm of torque reliably, so they put torque flags into the ECU programming for first and second gear. The transmission's inability to handle in excess of 500Nm of torque reliably was also the reason the BAII F6 Typhoon (550Nm) did not come with an auto (the ZF came out with the BF update). Same with the standard diff. You were feeding it much more power & torque then it was ever intended to withstand. What happened to that car was expected.

I don't know why people call the Ford Windsor V8 the "Wheezer," it is probably one of the best V8 engines of our time. Stock Ford neglected it; but it has the second greatest aftermarket following in the world (after the Small Block Chev at #1) and can be made to produce well in excess of 1000 horsepower with many parts store catalouges and no custom parts, all off the shelf. Comp cams alone has over 2000 different grinds for it...

Anyway, enjoy the GTI Polo and one thing the XR6 Turbo & EL 'mont definitley never had - handling!
