Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      I dont get on it as much as the track boys do, so the cooler can wait for the moment. I generally only give it some for a couple seconds at a time and then back to cruise mode

      something I've noticed already with the test ECU in is that the fuel economy has actually improved on short trips

      driving to the office i used to see the numbers come down to about 8L/100km, but now it easily gets down to 6.2L/100km
      its a rather short trip often with a lot of traffic

      Dont know if this is just an efficiency thing, or maybe the map in this ECU is just much more refined.

        When you do get the water to air intercooler system make sure you get a wide opening reservoir bottle so you can fill it with ice, lots of fun for a short time.

          Out of traffic it will be better on fuel. Don't need so much throttle for so long to get up to speed.
          Your ecu is on its way home . Probably Monday .��

            Hey what plugs do you guys recommend for a stage 1? preferably long life platinum / iridium ? i'll have a quick search too but thought I would ask

              NGK BKR7E. Standard NGK heat range is a 6. The '7' is one heat range colder. You'll be doubling the boost and with a cooked intercooler and choked stock exhaust, things get very hot. Provided you dont gap it bigger than 28 thou you wont be pushing the coil packs too hard or getting spark blow out. I could still feel the odd miss even at 28 thou so usually go 26 thou. They are a standard type copper plug but are cheap as chips and gets you into the habit of doing your plugs at every oil change. Obviously iridiums will last longer but cost stupid money for a road car and didn't make one iota of difference that I ever felt. Just as many misses and the same hiccup'y idle.

                    Copper is a better conductor of electricity than iridium. Iridium plugs are only used to extend service intervals, not for performance.

                      Eurgh, IE Informed me that my belt should arrive and ship this week.
                      the tensioner tool however is another month out, im just going to have to fabricate my own.

                        get a refund on the tensioner tool. A piece of flat bar drilled to accept two roll pins of the right size to fit the tensioner will take you 5 mins to make. I think I had to shorten my handle to get enough sweep on the tool but that was the only issue.

                          still waiting on IE for the belt.

                            First round of parts from IE is in. Coilpacks.
                            Tidied up the engine bay, removed all the vacuum related junk on top of the rocker cover, properly resistor'd out.
                            one of the lines that was removed fit nicely back onto the DV, so re-used it. Hopefully it wont jump off at an inopportune time.

                            changed plugs too, to the NGK BKR7E, gapped to 28 thou. Im guessing it should be right with the bigger coil packs, or i'll find out the hard way.

                            It had platinums in before, and they were pretty flogged out, well beyond service usage probably explains the couple of rounds of detonation i heard at mid throttle on hot days. luckily it looks like there was no damage to the plugs, so heres hoping theres no damage anywhere else, also lucky I wasnt fully on it hard when I heard the det.

                            next job SAI removal/blanking/Timing belt/etc. didnt want to tackle the SAI today as it would involve dropping coolant twice.

                            actually looks like I have an engine now the cover is removed.

                            also, byproduct, discovered the "extender" for the oil cap was leaking near the R/C, so removed that and put the cap straight on. looks muuuch better.

                            took it for a quick blockie and gave it a couple of squirts and no issues. excellent.

                            Wondering if the ECU would have pulled timing for the det events. is there a way to reset without vag-com?

                              Ecu adapts constantly. No need to reset it except if there's stored faults. A cheap obd BT tool would do it.
