  • Replacement headlight units for 2006 9N3 GTI

    Hi All,

I’m looking for some advice on the best option for replacing the headlight units in my 2006 9N3 GTI. The originals were polished a while ago but they’re now really yellow and cracking, and I don’t think further polishing will help. So, are non OEMs like TYC any good, or should I only be looking for a decent set from a wreckers?

    All advice gratefully accepted.

    Thanks

    Shaun

I got some TYC units last year and I'd describe them as "okay". They are a bit of a step down from the brand-new OEM in terms of construction and reflector quality, but are massively better than the hazy old originals that they replaced.

It took a bit of fiddling to get them securely bolted into the body and sit flush with the panels, and then a bit more adjustment to get the beam sitting at a good level - but I'd guess you'd have the same struggle with any OEM set you'd find at a wreckers.

If you're a details person it's probably worth mentioning that the TYC housings don't have the VW symbol on the bulb cap like the OEMs do - it looks more like WW.

Unless you can find an OEM set in almost new condition I reckon the TYCs are the way to go.

A mate of mine did the whole cut and polish to get his headlights Schmick again but then instead of clear coating them, applied a uv resistant clear wrap over them. His are still pristine but over the same time period mine have gone cloudy again.
