  • Electrical Issues?

    Hope someone can help me

Over the last week, my car has almost stalled and the power steering has cut out (and the light came up on the dash).

The first 2 times it happened when reversing up a hill and the revs dropped really low (I was trying to drive quietly). But... today it happened while waiting at lights with the clutch in. Idle speed dropped to about 600 or less and all the interior lights went off for a second then it came back to normal (bout 750revs) and the power steering light was on (and I could hardly move the steering wheel).

Has anyone else had this problem or know what might be causing it to happen?

It's never happened before last weekend and now it's happened 3 times (and I'm at idle A LOT in traffic).

    Cheers

Have you checked the battery terminals? They can come loose and may cause it.

You need to run a scan mate , could be anything there, if you have had lights im sure you will have codes

every time i'm waiting at the lights my revs drop to about 600 and then push back up to about 800-850, then settle back to 700. my interior lights never turn off however, thats weird mate, especially seeing as your power steering packs it in. take it in to VW and get them to deal with it. theres no doubt that would be covered.

                new car please?

EDIT: sam, its because you chose that rubbish colour . i have it just on my bonnet and look what happens to me!

Had this same problem on a 2004 VRX Lancer and could never find out what it was... replaced O2 sensors, knock sensors, coils packs etc etc... In the end just sold the car

Friend of mine has asked me to look into this, as they are having identical issues with their polo. The dealer has tried replacing battery, alternator etc. And their warranty has just expired, and the problem has come back again.

Anyone had this fixed? got any tips on what might be causing it?

Not that it will make you feel any better.... but if it is electrical it is a long hard road. I know with Mk3's if they start cutting out it is the coil or the relay. Given the steering light comes on, I'd be checking relays.

Just work back from the steering.

                        1. Steering motor is okay?
                        2. Alternator to power the motor okay?
                        3. Battery alright?
                        4. Relays swapped out
                        5. ECU

But it sounds like a regulator on the alternator, maybe it chucks on full load, hence revs drop and then spits the dummy and instantly no power for the steering rack? Just a theory...

Very interesting. Any idea how the fuel would impact on the power steering? Did the bad fuel send it into limp mode?

Vehicle cut out mate, this caused power steer loss. Bad batch of fuel , vehicle would intermittantly cut out, filled with fresh gear and fixed. Suprised me too. No credit being taken here VWGTI found out for himself after filling with fresh juice.
