  • Advice please - damage to headlight mounting

    Hi there,

i was hoping to get some advice/thoughts please.

I have a 2006 GTI, and I've just realised that I unfortunately have been hit-and-run while parked (looks like someone reversed into it).

This has broken the mounting piece that secures the headlight, for both sides (please see attached photo).

This piece looks like it's part of the headlight itself, so I was just wondering if this can be fixed or would new headlights be required?

And also if anyone has a rough idea of how much the fix might cost that would be great. There is also other damage to the front bumper, and I'm just wondering if it's worth going through insurance.

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.

Check with VW parts department, you may be able to get a repair kit for them.

That's actually part of the headlight itself. Mine cracked ages ago without any impact and I've just used some high strength tape across the crack to keep it located.

I was going to epoxy glue an aluminum strip across the tab but the tape is still secure

Mine was like that after my crash. I considered doing what you said - a thin aluminium strip shaped to fit inside the recess of the tab and some counter sunk self tapers. Paint it matt black and you'd never know.

Just wondering, would that tape be ok in terms of rego inspection?

Thanks Sam - what did you end up doing in the end?

ha stripping the wreck to a skeleton and buying a new Polo clone car to swap all the good bits into. One headlight was nearly rescue-able but fell by the wayside as things got a bit crazy with parts everywhere.

It probably wouldn't pass but we don't have to do those each year in Vic
