  • What brand tyres are people using?

    Hi all,

I'm looking at upgrading the rims on my polo in the next couple of months to 17x7 and I was wondering what brand and size tyres people have been running. I know there is a tyre and wheel thread already on the forum but I thought I'd still ask the question just in case there has been any updates.

    Thanks guys.
    Cheers,

    John

Sticky: The Official Polo Tire Thread

Pretty much everyone has updated their posts in there if they have changed tyres.

Thanks mate but I was looking for more specific details on people that are running 17's.
      Cheers,

You haven't asked for anything different as brand/size is exactly what is in the thread.

        What does 'more specific' mean?

We can't help you if you don't say what you want to know...

Also, I have 17s, see here for my thoughts.

That's the kind of info I was after. The tyre thread only has 4 pages and alot of it is either people that are still running 16's or just random chit chat. Hence the reason I started this thread to get info specifically off people that are running 17" wheels.
          Cheers,

          John

Understandable... that post I linked is in that thread though :p

It looks to me like the main options are the Maragoni's or Michelin's. They are very different. One (Michelin) is a road tyre with exceptional cornering grip and not so great straight line grip and the other (Maragoni) is a track tyre for road with great handling but less comfort/more noise.

Maragoni, that's not a brand I'm familiar with. Do you have any more info on these or some website links? Other things I was looking for was tyre width, 205 vs 215 on the 7 inch rims. Judging off some of the posts I've seen people have mixed feelings towards the larger width.
              Cheers,

              John

Not entirely true, Sam. I've got the Marangonis (16s ... not 17s) and they're not a track tyre ... nor are they any noisier than the Contis were. Rhys has the same tires in 17s and I think his comments were similar. They are a softer tire than the Contis and have amazing grip ... but I wouldn't call them a track tire.

Some say 215 fits without rubbing. I'm not so sure as I had 225s for a bit and they rubbed like a Thai massage shop.

There is a link and some info on the Marangonis in that thread somewhere too.

Sorry, I meant track bred... they are basically semi-slicks, but a ride friendly version

                        Thanks Rhys.

Those tyres look awesome. How long have you been running them for now? What's the wet traction like?

                        Cheers,

I went to my local Jax QuickFit to enquire about the Marangoni's as I've read a bit about them here. Not only do they look awesome, but apparently quieter than the Contis.

I asked the guy about them and he laughed... "Quiet? Compared to an RE001 they're quiet, yes. Stick with the Contis."

Even Bob Jane/Bridgestone and Tyre Power in my area all consider the Conti to be far superior as far as comfort/road noise in concerned.

                          So.... someone is BSing me.

Contis cost more ... and have softer sidewalls. I've had both and prefer the Marangonis.

contis are a dealer favourite cos they cost more... i would trust 1st hand reviews from fellow polo drivers than a tyre dealer
