Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

put the rear brake calipers, and discs on today, the new 2003 Bora v5 carriers worked a treat.....will bed in the new seals, pads and discs in and see how the brake pedal feels. Will also see if i can attach the pics correctly
Had gentle reminder maybe weight one side of disc and caliper to compare.....difference was about 1kg so not alot in the scheme of things.
forgot to weight the fronts so didnt know the difference on those....does anybody else ?Last edited by pologtiforfun; 14-07-2018, 10:02 PM.

shortshift kit
downpipe is on the radar too alon with highflow cat
will also do light upgrade thinking the white lights for parkers, headlights and fog as oppose to the current yellow coloured globes

intercooler, then downpipe and cat - I'm on that path now
Basically the way I figure, you can't really go downpipe and cat without a stage 2 tune, you need the intercooler to be able to go stage 2, so the intercooler comes first. It's still worthwhile having the intercooler while on standard tune, and it's a good idea for stage 1 tune.
Do you mind summarising the front and rear brake parts and the best/cheapest VW/Audi models to get them from?

Hey Simon,
I missed adding the bits....i have already done the TIP, Front mount intercooler,(forge) and throttle body pipe upgrade....also done the suspension, kw3....sorry i was lucky just kept working away and looked online when things were onsale often get 20 to 30% onsale plus the 20% vat discount as outside the UK ends up a good buy at times.
My logic is always upgrade the handling and stopping....upgrading the suspension first as you can always enjoy the upgrade to the handling, then its always great to be able to stop !!!.....then onto upgrading the power.
As for the brakes my quick summary, and i am referencing a bit of Gav's here......so Gav feel free to correct me if i am wrong.
If i did it again i would go the 125kw Bora V5, believe thats the 2001 onwards as they have the 256mm rear ventilated discs. The rear calipers and carriers bolt straight on. I did buy a piston and seal kit.....just as they are used brakes so may as well rebuild them while i can. If i did it again i would have pulled the pistions and checked, if nothing wrong just order the seal kit then rebuild them.
( I have a spare pair of rear calipers minus the carriers if anyone wants a pair going cheap )
Fronts i believe on the bora are the same 312mm as the audi 8N TT ( gav can correct me if i'm wrong) Gav said "the Polo, which I would identify as 9N3. That includes, Bora, 8L S3 and 8N TT" again same in regards to the piston and seal kit as per the rears
Also highlight that the brakes take a week or so to come up to speed as new seals take awhile to bed in and come good. the brake pedal feels long until they do.
I think the S3 are twin piston calipers on the front still the 312mm.....not sure about the rears though.
the 8L i have no idea about that one.
Again hunt around on gumtree or ebay and wreckers....Last edited by pologtiforfun; 16-07-2018, 09:17 PM.

Corrections, The front calipers on the S3 etc are in fact the same part as the MK4 GTI, it only the caliper brackets that turn them into 312mm. The Golf is 288mm.
Its important to know that the std Polo calipers will NOT fit the S3 brackets.

Some oldAudis had them, nothing in the MK4 chassis did.

i think they fit under 16's but dont seem to have that good a reputation, the S2's from reading were under braked.
I'm away for work, so will be back for the weekend to get a few more km's up over the weekend and bed in the pads and sealsLast edited by pologtiforfun; 21-07-2018, 09:06 PM.
