Good to see its getting sorted Mate.

On a similar note all the GTI's with gearbox probs are starting to turn me off the GTI,are there any stronger less problematic boxes on the market that can replace the stock polo box if it dies?

My real problem wih the whole gearbox thing is that the gearbox they replace the f****d gearbox with is the same gearbox. So it's a coin toss wether your new gearbox is a goodie or another crap one. So God help your wallet if the new gearbox lasts till 101,000kms.

I know the oil is now mineral rather than synthetic but I find it hard to believe that oil is causing this.

Must admit, the whole gearbox thing nearly turned me off buying a Polo as well.

Read that HUGE 'Dog & Lemon Guide' (I think it's called?) - Polo's have had gearbox problems forever. Quite pathetic on VW's behalf in my opinion.

        Agreed...

My front driver window will automatically go down when my mobile phone ring...

Change a new mobile, problem fixed...

Gear box crunch is getting worst and it never happens with my previous cars, so i m pretty sure this is not my driving problem...

You better not leave your phone in your car unattended

                It's auto isn't it? That's quite a conversion.

Don't be too bothered by the gearbox issue, every car has its faults. Just remember atleast you know what to expect right? If you get a GTI you know that it could be an issue, if you get something else, it could have any number of things go wrong with it.

                          I don't agree.

VW has known of the gearbox issues for years. Something should have been done about it by know. As Neil (GT3) says elsewhere they are known for making crap gearboxes and electric windows.

For a company that boasts of it's engineering smarts, for this to be an ongoing issue for years, is pathetic.

In 12 years of ownership with my 93 G200 Charade, despite flogging the guts out of it as much as possible (something I do not do with my GTI) nothing ever failed.

If the white coats at Daihatsu can do it right in terms of reliability (as they are renowned for) surely the VW boys could do the same or better with something as fundamental to a cars operation as it's gearbox?

I mean it's a 5 speed gearbox for God's sake - it's not like it's new fangled cutting edge technology.

But I do love my GTI

Hey, I had the same problem with mine. Grinding noise in first gear.... I drove it like that for another couple of thousand kms until the noise got worst. I took it for a check up to Essendon VW and they kindly without question replaced it with a new one under warranty!
They opened it up for inspection and found the that gear box was so badly damaged that is was way beyond repair.... new gear box in now and couldn’t be any happier! So my advice to you my friend is to drive it like that a little bit longer and then take it to your local dealer. If you’re in Melbourne I highly recommend you Essendon VW.

Yeah - that's what I wonder - some boxes go at less than 10,000kms so if you get a bad second box......

Out of interest, anyone know what a box retails for?
