Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • straight to stage 2?

Hey new poster here. Can call me Bubs. Just got my hands on my first VW 9n3 Polo. It has less than 50000 and will be used for daily use. Very impressed with the feel of the car but I cant help myself but to want the most out of it with minimal money thrown into the block. So mainly at this stage looking for a few bolt ons then straight to stage 2.

Dump pipe 2.5 or 3 inch has anyone had both fitted and can comment on the noise and idle?
Seat intake (PD160?). Is this the best TIP you can get or has anyone had better experiance with others?
    Is a front mount necessary?
just ur regular cone in box filter.
is anyone familiar with oscarli tunes?
let me know what else you would recommend.

will going to stage 2 effect the longevity of that big 1.8LT in that small little 1100kg Polo?

if anyone has some parts for sale dont hesitate!

    thankyou new polo family.

    Bubs.

I went 3 inch dump + cat and retained the stock back section. That keeps full noise sound down but it will have a deep burble at idle, but I cant say if its worse than a 2.5in dump in that respect. I'd only ever get 3in for a dump. Keep your stock airbox and just run clean filters. You're right to ditch the airbox inlet but seriously you can just buy a an oversized pipe from an auto shop and run that instead of the overpriced PD160. Read the PD160 threads though as they will tell you about removing a restrictive flap in the cold air intake above the radiator. You can get away without a front mount initially provided you vent the guard liner and open up the fog surround to get more air in and importantly out but you'll be limited. Best is to get a front mount and then with lower temps you'll allay some of those longevity fears. If the engine has been looked after it'll be fine on stage 2. I'd probably just get an injector clean done (not a bottle in the tank but the proper canister that runs direct into the fuel rail ) run fresh plugs BKR7E, 98 ron only, good regular oil and you'll be sweet. Then it wont go around corners and you'll start rebushing and chassis work and then you'll be poor but with a smile on your face!

I bought the downpipe and full exhaust of Anthony The Red Devil years ago when he went to the next level. I'm not sure what size it is but if I was keen I could go back and find his original thread. Everyone tells me it sounds great and I love it. I've even had a guy with a HSV Commodore compliment me on it. Nice burble at idle and a very engaging sound as it pulls up through the rev range coming out of corners etc. but has no drone. I went Custom Code Stage 1 from Gavin Walsh at 40,000k's and stage 2 at just under 100,000k's. It was my daily driver until about 12 months ago and now has 170,000+ and is still perfect. I run the PD160 intake (but I bought it cheap second hand) with a K&N panel filter. I still run the SMIC. You do notice a drop in performance up here in Queensland in summer after giving it a second boot full in a short period. Its noticeable in winter how much nicer it feels. It obviously hasn't affected the longevity of the engine. The tune should sort all that out anyway.

You definitely need to do the lower control arm bushes (I've had the Seat ones in since 40,000k's) and a stiffer dogbone mount helps too.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
2011 Skoda Octavia Scout now with Underground Performance tune
2010 Jetta 125 tdi dsg for the misses - Impressed
2006 Polo GTI - Enhanced by some of Gav's magic - Absolutely loving it

Sounds like a good pick up Bubs.

Dump pipe 2.5 or 3 inch has anyone had both fitted and can comment on the noise and idle? Mines a 4" dump so can't comment, but would go 3"
Seat intake (PD160?). Is this the best TIP you can get or has anyone had better experiance with others? I liked the improvement in my previous polo by installing the PD160 over the stock intake on a stage 1 tune. As Sam said, there are other options, I wanted to keep it looking stock so PD160 suited me. TIP is Turbo Intake Pipe and that's after the airbox, it's the pipe that feeds air to the turbo and yes I'd definately suggest doing that. The stock TIP will suck itselfs inwards and restrict airflow. The diverter valves typically don't require being changed over, so keep that stock until it shows signs of wear/not holding boost,
Is a front mount necessary? At Stage 2, I'd say yes absolutely - but that depends more so on your driving style, if just short blasts than not essential, if you want sustained hard driving than yes, the side mount just can't disipate the heat.
just ur regular cone in box filter.
is anyone familiar with oscarli tunes? Never heard of them, I'd suggest sticking with known tunes/tuners
let me know what else you would recommend. That's about it, air in / air out. Would want to start considering chassis related mods as Sam mentioned. Brake hardware is typically more than adequate for sustained abuse, but must be matched to suitable brake pads.

will going to stage 2 effect the longevity of that big 1.8LT in that small little 1100kg Polo? These engines are very strong. Gearbox's can show weakness if abused. Mine's been producing almost twice stock power from its early days and I track it quite regularly. Keep the fluids fresh and reputable tune, it should give a long and happy life.

Many of us run SeatSport cores, they can be bought from Darkside Development, Demontweaks (too I think) and probably countless other UK/European sites. As for piping, you can source most of the stuff locally, or buy the Forge kit. Forge also make a FMIC kit.

I bought my kit when exchange rates were better so was closer to $600-$700 landed and installed with a mate.

I don't get caught up in exhaust/muffler brands. A canon muffler is usually loader and more likely to drone, a baffled less likely to drone. There's not a lot that will fit our cars, I downsized from 3" muffler to 2.5" to take some highway drone out. Still sounds awesome.

If you can get just a dump and cat welded in for 520 then that's pretty good and I'd go with it. The Milltek stuff is expensive and still only 2.5in anyway if I remember correctly. Try to get a 200 cell cat or better though. Mufflers I don't know - I don't have one.

I have some bits and pieces that you may be interested in.

                I have a
                - PD160
                - Frankenturbo F23 turbo with less than 100km's on it
                - Forge Actuator fitted to the turbo
                - Bosch 550cc injectors
                - Turbo inlet pipe
                - Stainless 3in downpipe that is ceramic coated.
Selling it all for $1200 pickup or delivery at cost.
I have a ceramic coated relentless V3 turbo manifold that I'll throw in for free.
This was all set up on my Polo and was running well. I had a issue with the trigger wheel that took ages to find hence the low kilometers. This kit is basically brand new.

I pulled the motor out and am now going big turbo. PM me for any info.
