  • Out of warranty gearbox issues

    Hello,

I have a 2012 Polo Gti. Lately I have noticed a shudder taking off in 1st gear manual mode. Seems to be more noticeable when the engine is warm. Don't seem to notice as much in D mode. I read a lot of horror stories on the gearbox in these cars. Honestly wished I hadn't bought one. The car has only done 25000km. So first question, what may be causing this? Second question, has anyone had their gearbox fixed outside the warranty period done at VW's expense (as a good will gesture)? I did have the extended warranty but that has expired about 4 mths ago. Surely these gearboxes are made to last more than 25000km!

You need to replace cluthces. Visit dealer for a EKG test @ your cost then get them to apply for goodwill. Or just go straight to a specialist. Goodluck.

Any idea how much it would cost to replace the clutch?

Not sure if it's the same cost on a Polo, but my Passat B7 DSG will get a new clutchpack from VW under warranty. The cost outside warranty would be $1350 parts and $924 labor. This is dealership cost, I'm sure that through an independent it would be quite a bit less.

I used to R+R clutches in 1.4 hours flat including re-shimming. But book time is 6 hours + parts.

if you do replace it consider this as a long term solution DSG7/DQ200 Clutch Pack with Kevlar discs (MY2012+) - Clutches - Products

Thanks for the heads up. So I'm assuming these will last longer than the standard clutch. Gez costs a bit though. The shudder doesn't happen all the time though. Not sure why that is. Seems more when the car is warmed up.

Did you take it to a dealer yet? At 25,000KM, there's a good chance it will cost you nothing.

                Cheers

I was doing some research recently on after market clutch packs, just in case! I noted that listing above but a few things did not look right so I went through Rexbo International GMbH (DE) and they advised me that Luk do not do a Kevlar disc clutch pack for the DQ200.

Anyway I have sent an email to the company TMG Performance and asked them to confirm the listing above as correct? Meanwhile beware.

Yes, LUK do not do a clutch pack with Kevlar disks - that clutch pack is a modified LUK pack by TMG performance, they take a normal LUK clutch pack and replace the clutch plates with custom Kevlar friction plates. This is why it's so expensive, a normal LUK clutch pack for the DQ200 is around 350 euros.

TMG performance is a high end tuning and parts manufacturer in Greece - they do a lot of custom kit for the 1.4 TSI that no one else does, primarily because the 1.4 TSI is very popular in Greece (tax reasons on small capacity engines).

Thank you blower! Expensive but could still be a good option and it's suited to the 6C Polo.

That's ok if you also want to change the entire box to a manual box (That's not a DSG clutch pack)
