  • Headlights/DRL's Polo GTI MY16 Help

    Hi Guys,

Im new to the forum and wondering if someone could help.

I pick up my new polo next week and the first thing i want to change is the headlights to what i assume is either Halogen/Xenon headlights (clear/blue lights).

I raise my hand and admit im a newb, but i have no idea what i am looking for and what to do, so any help would be much appreciated.

    Thankyou

You should have ordered them in the car as on most models to do it properly and legally you are looking at about $4k

EG new headlights, washers , leveling system. Old headlights dont focus Xenons properly Unless light output is under a certain figure you need washers and if below the figure it isnt worthwhile doing it

A set of higher rated Phillips globes would be best and only cost a couple of hundred $$$.

Dont go higher than 5000k as whilst they may look whiter or bluer they have a lower light output that a 4300k or 5000k bulb

      Thanks Hillbilly, appreicate your response.

I actually never checked when i test drove the vehicle, but are the headlights already a clear/white? judging by pictures i found i looks as thought the headlights are what i have talked about above?

What i did see was the DRL's, and they looked to be a slight yellow colour, if this is the case, can you change the DRL to match the main headlights and if so what globes should i be looking for?

      Thankyou

right on the bottom there is a picture of it - it cost me 150$ to change it from stock to HID and led bulbs - very nice white/blue like xenon if not even better.

            Hi SloAu,

Thanks for your response, they look fantastic! i went to the website you mentioned in that thread but unsure what i should be looking for...think you could assist?

Also, have you done anything with your DRL's? i know im probably being Anal, but not a huge fan of the yellow light....

            Cheers

Yes you can get those BUT Halogen housings do NOT focus Xenon bulbs correctly due to a different bulb length Entirely up to you.

Also if the output of the bulb is over 2000lumens you must fit washers to be legal

They might look alright but what do they look like to someone coming the other way

I'm also interest in doing this, have you checked the focus? I have seen specific application HID bulbs that have the same length as the Xenon bulbs they are replacing (ie; maintain OE focus) but some are terrible, blinding to oncoming traffic and splay light all over the place but where you want it.

A quick check is to find a light coloured wall and shine the headlights on it from 10 metres away, then again say 20 metres. Take a couple of photos, that way it's easy to compare the focus to the OE bulbs, plus any scattered light is obvious.

                Cheers

I wanted to change to aftermarket LED headlights but have since found that LED globes will scatter light unless the reflector housings are designed for them. I think one of the forum members have found that out in one of the threads. Maybe someone can find OEM LED headlights for the GTI at a reasonable cost which will then be plug n play replacements for the current Halogen units

OEM are Halogen bulbs. Xenon and HID are two words for the same thing.

I'll just about guarantee the new GTI's LED's will not just 'plug and play' into current, non LED cars. I doubt even pre-facelift GTI's with Xenons would work properly with the new LED's.
Many people wanted to retrofit HID's to their 6R Polos but that was a massive struggle as there are several changes that must be made to the car for them to work.
