2015/16 Polo GTI Real World Fuel Consumption

Hi All,

Been driving the Polo GTI MY16 for about 3 weeks now and my average consumption is approximately 9-10 ltr/100km. Is this normal?

I've been driving it the same way as usual. Always on cruise control when travelling at constant speed and have my Stop/Start activated too. My 2014 Honda Odyssey is doing about 8-9 ltr/100km (RON 91) which get me curious about what happened to the Polo GTI. I thought the reported fuel consumption is around 5-6 ish ltr/100km?

Is it because the engine is still new? Interested to hear what your average fuel consumption like.

While driving in the city I get usually 11-12l/100km. When going for highway it's around 9l/100km.

Hey, my GTI is sitting at about 8.1 at the moment. I drive it as per the shift indicators on the dash and don't let it get on boost unless there is a genuine reason (Like leaving a P plate commodore driver in my wake)

I recently hit 1500 ks. My average is about 8.5l/100 ks. I supect they reached their advertised consumption figures driving 10 ks per hour with everything turned off.

My average is also low 8s after about 4,500ks. I can get much better but the car is to enjoy, not save petrol

I have the Gen1 version of the same engine in my (much heavier) Octavia. Your Gen 3 is a lot more fuel efficient.

With a Bluefin remap I average 6.7L/100km (mostly highway driving for me). I get <7L/100km on the highway (as low as 5.4L/100km) and around 9.5L/100 in the suburbs (depending on how much Sydney gridlock there is). I rarely use AC which increases consumption by about 2L/100km on my car.

You will find that the economy will improve at about 5000km and take another dip at 15,000km and again at 25,000km. You might also find that winter weather below 12c chews through fuel as well (mine does).

At the moment, right through to 3000km you shouldn't be trying for good economy. Try and get some pressure behind the rings so the engine beds in nicely - you don't have to thrash it to achieve ring pressure - just ride the torque curve between 2000 - 4500rpm.

edit: We have a 2015 Odyssey. That chews through fuel - average 11L/100km for us.

I have just done 1200kms and fuel consumption on the freeway gets down to 6.1 avg at 100kmh cruising. Most times it is around 7 ish. That's with climate control, radio, cruise control, lights, everything running as normal, no special driving techniques. Maybe I am a light foot?

I've done 1800 on mine and it's at 8.2 city and highway

Once you hit the freeways you can expect to achieve between 6.1 to 7.2 per 100km, once you get to anything below 70km/h with a frequent amount of stop / start driving (inclusive of traffic lights amd vehicle traffic) then naturally your fuel consumption average goes up to around 8.5-11l per 100km.

Checked the GTI car page again this morning, 947km driven, 7.9L/100km fuel consumption.

For the manual the biggest tip I can give is remember this rule 20km/h = 2nd, 30km/h = 3rd, 40km/h =4th and so on. The engine has so much torque that it just pulls effortlessly between 1k and 2k revs.

They are my economy driving shift points as well (no passengers / flat road) but please don't do that with a new engine. It will bite you later on.

My MY16 has done 7,800 and Im getting 6.7-6.8 each week which includes both urban/freeway driving as well as plenty of squirts.

I often short shift as others have said the thing is a torque monster.

Dont nanny the car early on otherwise it wont free up.

Maybe they only live 5km from work?

I often skip a gear going up or down through the box: 1,2,4,6; 1,2,3,5; etc. There's lots of lazy torque to play with.

I can stretch to 10 -12 days (to match the fuel price cycle in Sydney) between fills on a 55L tank doing 500km/week. Managed my all time record last week of 853km between fills. 800km+ is fairly normal if I don't get stuck in any traffic jams.
