Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I figured out how to put the wiper arms in service position when did the washing yesterday. As I said, new to VW, still getting used to my new Polo.

On the other hand, personally I'd appreciate a manufacturer could make things simple and straightforward at the first place.
Hidden wipers = better aero = less wind noise & better fuel economy.

If you want simple & straightforward then VW won't be your friend. You probably should have bought a Mk2 Cortina.

The wiper thing (and many other "hidden" features) is in the owners manual.

Have just done the paint touch up BTW, check the right wiper arm again, once left up, it will definitely scratch the edge of bonnet on its way up and back. The right arm can only be raised up around 30 degree before touching the bonnet. The left one is fine.

Now I feel it's more like a design fault since it's common practice to raise the wiper arm when washing the front windscreen. Not a problem with my other cars owned.

Have to be carefully if this is the case.
I like the 'aero' argument but I am one to agree it's a bad design - it's the case for the Mk2 Octavias too. The 3 that I saw at dealerships prior to buying the one I own now all had big chunks of paint taken off at the same spot - which was the reason why I read the manual before washing my car and finding out about the service position ... quite a few cars have this design now in fact.

Can clearly be either owner error, car washer error or dealer error etc. etc.

You can buy the base coat and clear coat from your VW dealer. Both bottles cost R140 here in South Africa. I just had mine repaired by a panel beater and it looks brand new. It cost me R250.

The thing that annoys me the most is people putting pamphlets under your wiper in parking lots and damaging your paint - then they deny it was them.

I had to do this as a job many years back. The number of wipers that came off in your hand....
