  • Bad fuel or other issues?

    Hey guys, I wouldn't consider myself an economical driver by any sense of the word - but it appears in the last week my average consumption has gone up from just over 6l/100km, to struggling to stay under 9ish. This appears to have coincided with the tank of fuel I've put in but I'm not 100% sure... Could this be the cause, and if so, what can I do? I've had the car for about 2 or 3 months now - 2011 MY12 77tsi, and have been putting nothing but vortex premium in from 1 of 2 near by stations. Thanks for any help you can provide!

      I thought there was a chance it was that... Would the effects be that severe?

        My polo gti is using a bit more fuel than normal over the past week, and i know cold increases fuel consumption.

        Cold weather will make your engine take longer to warm up meaning the choke will be on longer, heater blowers are on high, cold oil in engine and gearbox will have increased friction. I just think all these sorts of things add up.....

        If its still using that much over the next few weeks get someone to look at it

          Ah okay, that makes sense. Thanks for that!

            That's a big increase!

            In actual fact, cold air is more dense that hot air. I'm aware turbo's love cold air more but more so due to lower intake temps. This creates a better 'burn' due to the higher density of air this less fuel 'should' be being used (marginal).

            My thoughts are.....
            * Maybe tank/bowser was not actually pumping 98RON. A tanker driver does the QA when he/she delivers a load of fuel.
            * Is the car pinging/misfiring/hesitating?
            * Heavier traffic now schools have returned for Term 3?

            Go to another servo, put in some octane booster and then fill up with 98RON again. This should rule out fuel issues.

              Have you started using a different oil, or has it been a while since your last service? Also check your tires. My GTI uses heaps more fuel when the tyres are running low or if the oil is more viscous (eg. if it's due for a service)

                The car is still running fine, and due to my work hours I never really have to deal with traffic Think I'll just ride out this tank provided it continues to run okay. Might top it up from another servo, but will see how I go!
