  • Polo knock sound on steering wheel full lock?

Car in question is a 2010 Comfortline TDI, Manual. I'm still getting used to it, older car's steering turned a bit more so I kinda end up running into the full lock in parking lots, with a bit of force. It just does a single knock sound, not quite sure where it's coming from yet, but somewhere from the front, and it's not too loud either. It gets louder the harder I run into full lock on the steering wheel, and is never heard of during braking, moving while in full lock, reversing, whatever. Should I be worried, or is it normal?

I have the same issue with my Polo GTI 2012. It seems to be a very common problem with the 6R models, but I can't get a straight answer yet, I'm still googling around.

Well at least I'm not alone in not being able to find anything online. Everyone seems to have bigger issues such as multiple knocks nearing full lock/ squealing noise, etc. I'm not sure if it's a problem or not, even, as my Commodore does the same thing, as does a mate's Commie.

Probably hitting on the stops so you dont turn inside out LOL

Be gentle Full lock with force is not only hard on steering but on tyres as well.

That's what I thought initially as well, dad and I had an argument about it right then and there, he was very sure it was an axle problem, or something, and said I never listen to him, yada yada. You're probably right about that, thanks mate.

Mine does the same thing too... I thought it was just the springs shifting In their seats but possibly not, if someone works it out sounds like a lot of us will be grateful

Same thing was happening to me. Reverse and as I went into full-lock I would get the knock sound.

I initially had some creaking as well so I took it to VW and they replaced the steering rack (warranty job). This resolved the creaking issue but I am still getting the knock sound when reversing.

                Check the front subframe bolts.

Also check for play in the front wheel bearings. I once dealt with a 9N GTI, that had a similar knock. It had the slightest play in the left front wheel. It turned out that the hole in the upright/knuckle was everso slightly oversized, meaning the outer race of the wheel bearing was not as snug as it should have been.

You would think it would be the same issue just a different direction. Mine is only reverse at the moment (but could be wrong) I'll pay more attention

Well I'm only on L's so can't really drive alone, especially since both parents are gone, but I took it around the block and it does it in reverse, and even (as much as I hated doing that) while standing still.

                            Hi,

Since I got my Polo 6R GTI from new there was a knock noise when I braked while reversing. I replaced the front brake discs and the knock noise was gone, but after 1000km it returned even worse. The knock noise is now audible without braking while reversing. I spoke to the VW workshop manager and he said it is a common problem with the Polo's. The wheel bearing has got some play within the wheel bearing housing which is causing the knock/clunk noise. Unfortunately when they remove the wheel bearing it is damaged and requires a new wheel bearing. He also said they use Locktite when pressing in the new wheel bearing.

I still need to book my Polo to have the wheel bearing replaced.

I had both my front ones replaced for the same reason.. Mine was when you would go up driveways and what not with some lock on.. Berwick vw workshop foreman said bearings were a possibility and replaced them and that noise went way...
