My gf's 1.4 2010 polo is out of warranty

my good mate owns a vw workshop so can get cheap parts easily

I have no idea about those engines but can you just throw a small turbo on there or something?

I wouldn't bother. Just leave it as it is and enjoy it being reliable run around, as soon as you add anything you risk reliability. If you want power etc, get another car like a polo GTI or 77tsi polo or even a 90 golf and muck around with them. Not worth the $$ to mod a NA 1.4.
