Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Removing spark plug leads on a Polo 6R

Do the leads pull straight off the plugs or do you need a tool for it. Cant get my fat fingers down onto the metal part over the plugs.

Also what size is the plug spanner if I get the leads off.

Trying to do them myself before dealer rips me off on Friday LOL.

    TIA

Hey mate, if you're really gentle you can pull then off by hand, there is a 'spark plug lead boot' tool thing that works a treat - I don't use it. I just usually get them off by hand, or depending on how I am feeling I will use 'hose clamp pliers' being really gentle.. Just a normal size spark plug socket you will get from any local automotive shop, 16mm. Best to get a magnetic one if you can.

Long right-angle long-nose pliers, if that makes sense.

Grip onto to the metal sleeve enough not to crush it, and turn it left and right to break the seal, and you should be able to pull upwards easily from there.

Also use the same pliers to seat the leads back onto the plugs securely as well.

DO try your best not to trash the leads. They're about $60ea!

Thanks maybe I should leave it to the stealer but have heard they can charge $150 for the set when they should be about $60.

Also asked prev about the DSG 4 years old low K's should they do it and if so how much

Do whatever you feel comfortable with matey.

Also from your signature it appears you have a 77 TSI Polo? Which means you have a 7 speed DSG gearbox which is filled for life (even after the 35c1 recall) no need to change it

That was $60 per lead. They're about $200 for the set.

I'm not sure about the Polo but on mine you loop a couple of cable ties around the coils (you haven't really got leads have you?) and pull upwards

Like the other guy said, grab, twist pull - just have to get in there somehow.
