Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

due to a much wider selection of wheels, ive always thought about converting from the 5x100 to the 5x112,
but being in australia, are spacers legal? roadworthy?

    Who runs them?

  • #2
    No.
    Not legal or roadworthy.

Best to just run a set of 5x100 wheels and use the offset/width of the wheel to fill the gap you are looking for.

Eh. Just do it. Adapters, when built properly and installed correctly are safe.

And who determines if they are properly built and installed correctly?
That is why they are illegal.

It is easy to say "ehh, just do it/she'll be right" when you aren't the one who is going to cop a fine/defect notice for braking the laws.
I would prefer the users of this forum provide legally accurate and defensible advice when asked for input on modifications.

Also I would like to add that the overall track on a axle cannot be increased by more than ~20mm past the bigest offset wheels the manufacturer supplies. 17" Boavista's and Detroits are et46 so the biggest offset you can do is et36 (10mm extra per rim).

Spacers / adapters unless they come from the manufacturer (like porsche) are illegal.

Now that the legal terms are out of the way, at the end of the day it's up to you and how much you push the wheels out as to off the cops will care. I have got 15mm spacers on the front and 20mm on the rear and I haven't had a problem becuase the wheel doesn't poke - it's flush. Also don't go cheap on the spacers or nuts. It could cost you your life.

I got some H&R trax+ spacers and extended wheel bolts from ECS tuning in the U.S. (Just look up parts for a MK4 Golf as they share the same rear components). As far as Instalation goes your on your own as tyre places know they are illegal and will not fit them as such. I just put mine on in the front yard.

If they are hubcentric spacers they will sit on the original hub and wheel sits on the spacer. You then just tighten up the bolts in a star pattern as per the normal tyre change routine. Min torque is 120nm which is pretty much tightening up the wheel bolts until you can't turn them any more by hand.
