  • CEL for a short time...

Hi All, so my wife has the car today and she rings me saying the CEL has come on twice for about 2 seconds then goes away... Car drives fine (as I'm told).... Any ideas, or is it a trip back to the stealership on a tow truck?

Wouldn't get it towed, although I would book it in for a checkup, could just be a sensor playing up.

So I too the car for a short drive tonight, the MFD goes red and displays "Oil pressure engine off see manual" service was completed less than 1000km ago... Not very happy... Dealership is getting an unhappy call on Monday...

Check the dipstick first, and see how it reads.

If it's like way under, and there's no obvious leaks, then yeah maybe get a little upset with them.

To the OP, have you been putting in the recomended 98 (95min) octane fuel? If the fuel is incorrect the engine will ping and will retard performance. If it's a constant misfire it will start disabling cylinders.

Pinging doesn't mean misfires. Maybe time for new pistons

A ping is a misfire - a misfire been a ignition that was not planed so it could be late / early or not fire at all.

I have never heard a car which is running normally and pings (actually it sound more like popcorn popping instead of a high pitched ping)

                  A misfire is a non-fire.

                  Pinging is uncontrolled combustion.

                    Sooooooooooooo..........

The car went into to VW today....

And had a very positive experience from Bryan Byrt (Queensland) I rang them Monday lunch time, they said that they were completely booked but would do their best to fit me in.... No loan cars available, but offered a lift to work.

My wife works near by, so I got her to give me a lift. Dropped the car off this morning, they had organised me a car anyway. Apologised for the issue with the car and said I would have a phone call by lunch time...

1pm I get a call from them saying that at the service (15 service) a new oil filter was fitted. Which is spring loaded internally and one of the retainer clips had failed causing the pressure discrepancy. Car was ready by 2pm for collection.

Overall very very happy... And the car seems to go better....

As Umai said, as misfire is a cylinder which is failing to fire/ignite. Although the term is abit misleading.

I've always found pinging to sound like two tiny hammers to be tapping against each other.

Has the car been serviced recently RUFNIT ? That usually occurs from either the filter being dropped, being tightened too much or someone forgetting the old seal in the housing.

Meh depends how you look at it

I go by what the internet, workshop manual and VCDS tell me - Misfiring is a general term used to describe an incomplete combustion within a engine cylinder - the main cause of a engine misfire been a miss-timed combustion event.

Anyway glad the problem was solved funny that it could be somthing as simple as oil pressure, just hope no other damaged has been caused as a result.
