  • Looking to Buy - Sooty Oily Smelling Exhaust Tips

    Hi there,

Quick question (and yes have done quite a few searches), would be keen to know a little bit about exhaust tips and their possible connection with excessive oil consumption.

I posted earlier this week asking for help on choosing between two models of GTI. I've managed to whittle my choice down to a 2013 CTHE Engine Polo GTI. The car is immaculate with only 10K on the clock. I've taken it for a drive and there are no clunks from the DSG and the engine runs great.

I inspected the back hatch (white) and there was not a sign of any soot however the exhaust tips were covered in black soot (never cleaned by the looks of it). I wiped some of the soot off (it was dry, not greasy) and smelt it, the smell reminded me of the same smell of used oil when I used to change my own engine oil.

Any idea of whether that is normal, I know most cars make soot, what about the oil smell? Would be keen to hear about 6R Polo GTI owners exhaust tips relative to oil use. No oil smell on tips and no or little oil use? Oil smell and soot and no or little oil use? Oil smell and soot and excessive oil use?

Sorry if this has been covered before but would be interesting to know if it hasn't. Could potentially help other people looking to buy a 6R GTI .

    Thanks
    Rob

I can't comment on the smell but my gti doesn't use excessive oil but the tips are still black. It does seem like a dry carbon buildup so I'm just assuming it's normal combustion products and not oil. Having driven behind some other gti's they do really pump out some black smoke at full throttle.

It would be of extremely limited practical use.

I would think that checking the soot on a car exhaust pipe as an indicator of its condition would be lets say, something for the professionals. Like the same way a tracker learns for years in the wild how to pick where an animal has passed through, I think you would have to do the university masters in exhaust pipe carbon analysis to get anywhere.

      Just sayin.

Thanks, yip that was helpful info.

Took it for a test drive today, did about 30km and cleaned the tips before I left the dealer, good news was very little soot on the chrome and none on the back of the car.
