  • Does the MY12.5/13 GTI Still Suffer from DSG/Mechatronics & Oil Consumption Issues?

I'm not sure whether the 12.5 got the CTHE (whatever that means) engine replacement over the CAVE one (new to these VW acronyms). I've read countless stories about how the earlier models suffered from DSG failure, and had absurd oil consumption figures among others. I've also read that VW warranty department are hopeless to deal with. Just wondering if the issues have been rectified in MY12.5 or MY13 cars? If so, getting an ex-demo or runout model when the MY15 comes out (or earlier) will be a serious consideration.

In a similar note - is it worth getting an earlier MY11 or 12 if the mechatronics unit has been replaced etc?

    Thanks in advance!

    Just buy a Golf GTI.

    Less headaches.

I would not personally go near anything less than an MY13 as the chances of an oil burner and DSG problem are statistically higher than later models. Not to say that MY13's and above don't have these issues, but I think they are less likely. I have an MY13 and am very happy, no problems with DSG and oil use has settled to around 500ml between 15k services.

Sorry but that is a load of drivel. Provide me those statistics?

Until I see an ounce of concrete evidence proving the new engines are any more sound...the perception remains that it's all hit and miss unfortunately.

Sorry dude the only statistics I can give you is less whinging of problems with the later model cars.

I don't think I have seen someone with a CTH engine with more than 500ml oil use per 1000km, plenty of examples with CAV though!

Mine is My13.5 CTHE Engine and Im one of those unfortunate people with high oil consumption issues. Only had the used 2013 Polo Gti for more than a month but i have to go back to the dealer twice for an oil top up. Doing 1000kms consumption test at the moment.

Anyone else with the same oil consumption issues with Polo Gti MY13.5 model?

Best you rethink your selection of words next time. Statistics means facts...and you don't have them apart from the less whinging and hearsay acquired from a few owners having a stroke of luck. That counts for very little because there are quite a few members on this forum who will happily debate your analysis and 'statistical' oversight on this matter.

People can talk about run in procedures or whatever until the cows come home, but at the end of the day, be it CAV or CTHE...I repeat...it's all hit and miss.

Hey hsantos do you drive in mostly D or M. The reason I ask is there seems to be some documented evidence that D mode burns a lot more oil than M mode. Really don't understand why but it does for some.

I mostly drive on D without passing 3000rpms till the engine oil temperature goes up to 80°c
then either M or S but not too often. So basically im more into D

ATYPIC- I'll stand to be corrected on my use of the term 'statistics', it was meant to be used loosely. Whilst both CAV and CTH have clearly displayed oil burning issues, my VW mechanic who is also a friend of mine claims that the newer motors are "far better" believe it or not!
Anyway to the OP who asked for advice on which model to buy? If you still like the Polo GTI even after knowing about some (only VW would know the real ratio of oil burners vs non oil burners) of the reported oil burning you could always get one with an extended warranty and sell well before the warranty expires. Even though I would consider my oil use to be non existent (only by VW standards) I plan to sell at the 4 year mark, I think the engine is way too complicated and expensive to maintain for long term ownership. My 2 cents.

hsantos - try driving in M mode exclusively from cold start ( try to always keep revs above 2k rpm but below 3k rpm until engine is warmed up), try this for a few weeks and see if there is any difference. It may or may not help, worth a shot!

Just noticed your on a consumption test - don't change your driving style until after your test is complete.
