Noob Question: DIY painting rims Vs. Powder Coater

Hey guys,

New here, so please go easy! I haven't had much exposure to 'DIY' or modifying cars to begin with, hasn't really been in the family and I've just gotten my first car (Polo 77tsi). So the question is, is it worth learning and painting my 17 inch Boavista rims black, DIY style, or pay the cash to get it done professionally through a powder coater? What are the differences in pricing for both of these, is getting your rims painted through a shop expensive? If possible could anyone give me an approximate figure? I'm just weary of screwing up my brand new rims, and nobody wants that ahah.

A few cans of Plasti-dip is cheaper than a professional paint job. It's quite easy to do, and can peel straight off if you don't want it on the wheels any more.

Been researching plastidip a lot recently man, it looks pretty awesome. Where abouts do you order yours for? Plastidip.net.au seems to be $30 a can, and I've seen Autobarn also stocks it.

There are 2 importers for plasti-dip in Australia - Plastidip.net.au and Caswell Plating.

Plastidip.net.au are the "official" distributor but resell the product at $30.

Caswell can't buy it at wholesale but instead buy in bulk from a reseller in the US (where it retails for $6.85 a can).

They sell it for $25 a can here: Plasti Dip Spray On Coating Colour Selection

Caswell plating are also the suppliers for Autobahn. There's a few people that have done wheels so they can probably tell you how many cans you'll need, however if you only need a couple of cans then I'd get them from Autobahn as it'll save on shipping.

Like usual we're getting ripped off here in Aus. But it is classified as a dangerous good so transportation is more difficult (and more expensive).

Thanks heaps for the reply mate! Was going to ask where I could get plastidip just for the grill and brake callipers, I'll pop into Autobarn tomorrow. Hopefully someone can let me know how many cans it'd cost to do rims! Thanks again

They recommend a can for each rim, but I used about 2 cans to do all 4 rims.
You also won't be able to do your callipers in plasti-dip. You need high temp paint.

Thought that might be a bit of an issue plastidipping brake callipers ahahahha. You got any pics of your rims man? What's the process like for doing your rims in plasti dip, did you use any type of pre spray? Also approximately how much did it set you back to do all your rims?

One ahead of you, just watched one before aha! Is there anything that substitutes for that guys 'pre-dip' mixture that you can buy from any auto shop at all?

Thought that might be a bit of an issue plastidipping brake callipers ahahahha. You got any pics of your rims man? What's the process like for doing your rims in plasti dip, did you use any type of pre spray? Also approximately how much did it set you back to do all your rims?

Just make sure to degrease them, clean them and dry them. I left it till the next day to spray them.
- Take them off 1 by one.
- Lay the wheel flat on some cardboard
- If you've got some business cards, wedge them in between the tyre and the rim to cut down the amount of over spray on the rubber
- I did about 7-8 light coats on each rim
- Give it 20 min and carefully put the wheel back on
- Take off next wheel and repeat

Yes as Auditude says use high temp paint for your brake calipers - available at most auto stores. It's a pretty simple job but will take a few hours. Can be done without taking them off - there'll be youtube videos for these upgrades too. Otherwise check out might car mods as they're always good for a laugh and pretty informative.

You could do a few thick, close coats towards the end to get it a bit shinier.
Plasti-dip also do a gloss finish you can do a final few coats with to get it nice and shiny.

I think you'll find it's the reflection from the flash which makes it look that way. Yes you can get gloss(ish) look and there's also metalizers too: Introducing the new Plasti Dip Enhancers
