  • Should I stick with my Polo?

So after firing off a formal letter to VW today after having my Polo for 19 months on the nose I am contemplating wether my POG is worth all of the hassle.

To summarise: 10+ visits to Osborne Park VW for services, remediation works, “consumption tests” and other items including:
    - Complete Engine replacement
    - Fuel Breather pipe fitted
    - Fuel Breather pipe fitted with duct tape instead of Volkswagen “required” fabric – FIRE/DAMAGE RISK identified by VW DVG Melville
    - Trim rattle that is still unresolved after multiple remediation attempts including replacement of the Sound Actuator, installation of foam inside the Rear Right passenger door
    - Slipping clutches that, after a visit to DVG Melvile I was given a print-out page from a Service Manual for a VW Beetle that had poorly written English stating “clutch are good”. They are NOT good, changing up from 2nd into 3rd and 3rd into 4th often results in slipping back down to 2nd with high revs.
    - Clamp leaking on Exhaust (identified by VW DVG Melville as poor worksmanship by VW Osborne Park)

To add insult to injury yesterday as I attempted to drive home from work in 42C temperatures in Perth, my air-conditioning died, resulting in a sweaty, stinky 15km drive home that has ruined my work suit-pants and shirt.

To be honest I love the Polo... but it seems that it almost always has some sort of fault that I am having to deal with which has sucked all of the enjoyment out. Thankfully I held off on any modifications to the car with the exception to the Reversing Cam & Auto lights...

I really wanted to go for a new Golf R (2014/15 model) or Golf GTI, but after all of the above, I'm not sure I could honestly deal with the arrogance and crap from VW Service that i've had to deal with over the last 2 years....

So.. please help me decide lol.

All marques produce duff models at one time or another, so I wouldn't tar all VW cars with the same brush just yet.

Nice as the Polo is (when working), I think there are too many reports of duff engines and gearboxes (for whatever reason) to my liking.

The Mk7 Golf GTI or R, despite not being on the market for very long, sounds like a much better bet than a Polo. Your call, but I think it's worth taking another chance.

At least you now know which dealers to avoid for service and repairs.

I agree and since there is one internet for whole world, and as almost everyone has the access to it, you can count the "duff" cars precisely, and then the number is not that big at all (from the total amount produced).

Polo GTI = s&%t box. Given how many issues there have been, I have NEVER heard of a perfect running one. So cut your losses and for those who say 'for every one unhappy owner on this forum, there are 100 who don't and aren't on this forum', show me one Polo GTI owner who has never had a problem from day 1 who has done at least 10,000km......

The Golf GTI is proven and mine so far has no issues. I wouldn't recommend the Polo GTI - a family member is looking at something like this and I even suggested that the new Renault Clio RS may be a better bet than the Polo GTI. Although swinging them to the Golf slowly...

You're asking people to show you one owner who has never had a problem....well that statement alone could apply to almost any production car on the market because all car manufacturers have issues, large and small. No doubt the Polo and VW have taken a beating of late...but life goes on

The fact remains, there some people who are very happy with their cars despite the ongoing issues....but thanks for your 5 cents.

Glad you said "almost" our 991 runs perfectly "at the moment" thank you very much

But I agree, nearly almost every car has some "issue" small to disastrous. I bet a dollar that the new Clio RS is going to have a lot of trouble in Australia, the Alternator alone is too close to plastic / rubber seals and rings add that with 40 degree plus weather = ruh roh!

I've had my PGTI since mid Jan 13 and it now have almost 28K on the clock. I really have not had any issues with it at all so far (apart from left rear number plate light popping out- twice so far and 1L/10,000km oil consumption - good for a PGTI but bad for most other manufacturers). DSG has been flawless so far (touch wood).

Mines done 10500k as of today... And I've had no issues. My only complain is the poor reversing light output which I rectified with a CREE LED bulb

Cut your losses iigx. Even as a vw enthusiast i just cannot bring myself to recommend a vw to anyone. If the person asking is dead set on a vw, I'd push them into a manual and disown them if they bought a dsg, even a wet clutch one.

OK so I have only done 3,500ks in 7 months but not a single issue. I can't say that for any of the 10 odd new cars I have purchased in the past. Oil use - dip stick level dropped about 2mm only.

Still compared to the golf GTI and other brands I have owned, issues like oil use (no matter how little) are just not good enough today given the choice we have in today's highly competitive car market. Not to mention the other ones noted - even if newer polos are better than early ones

Thanks guys. I will wait and see what VW come back with, but as far as my thoughts go Finance_Analyst hits the nail on the head. My wife has had two Hyundai IX35's and while they have had a few tiny issues such as the stereo fading out, they never had to have whole engine replacements, then need gearbox replacements and so on. It's fine for a few things to slip by the QA, but seriously the engine and the gearbox should be faultless in such a modern car, especially from the likes of Volkswagen. I now miss the reliability of my V6 Aurion ZR6 that I parted ways with to get the POG.

I've sold mine in Feb... I've gone back to an old aircooled volkswagen. I now have a car that has had less engine rebuilds (despite being 43 years older), burns less oil, visits the work shop less (despite requiring more frequent servicing), costs less to service, less to insure. And at the end of the day its worth more too.

The only thing I do miss is the polos looks, xenons and interior! Here you can see their are people happy with their gtis but after chatting with a few owners it seems the majority have had major issues with them.

I would try a new veedub only if the dealerships improved as that was one major issue for me.
