  • New tyres/rims and wheel hopping Polo GTI 6R

Hey guys, has anyone experienced this? On my stock 17"s and Dunlops i used to get wheel spin but the new rims and tyres (18" Kumho KU39's) seem not to get wheel spin but when accelerating hard from a stand still I get some vibrations and slight wheel hopping.

I will not the new tyres feel grippier than the old tyres. I'm just wondering what the cause is and what damage i could be doing to the car.

I don't drive it hard but i definitely feel it when I'm accelerating harder out of corners or from a stand still.

It's called axle tramp and is basically a resonance between the unsprung mass and the strut being driven by the grip and front end anti-dive/lift geometry.

Not a huge deal but will work your dampers a bit more than otherwise. To get rid of it, you need more compression damping (stock dampers usually have none), less grip (not the point of the exercise ), less anti-dive/lift (Whiteline WALK or SuperPro bushes with castor shift) or less unsprung mass (lighter wheels/tyres) - this will shift the resonance frequency up to a point where the tramp won't occur.

Will working the dampers more damage the car or cause any permanent damage in the long run?

It will wear them out fractionally more quickly but I doubt you'd notice the difference unless it's happening every time you take off from stand still.

Even grippier tyres or playing with tyre pressures could also reduce or eliminate it (or possibly make it worse)

My personal method was to go for tyres with more grip, lower front tyre pressures, rear anti roll bar (for corner exit) diff setting to strong and finally, more power to induce spin rather than tramp

I'd be more worried about drive train damage than dampers. Every one of those vibrations is like dumping the clutch giving the CV's and gears a good thump. I offer you this as my personal exhibit A, the effects of tramp.

Was that on a Polo GTi??
