  • My new wheels for my polo :)

    Hey guys,

Just sharing pics of the wheels I got today from Taleb Tyres.

I got matte black 18"x7.5 rims on Nitto Invo tyres 225/40

Only small issue is the left rear wheel scrubs slightly when turning right at speed.

We found that the rear bumper has a weird bump that protrudes, we noticed the scrubbing as soon as I drove so we used a heat gun to soften the plastic and pushed the bump in, it fixes it up nicely but scrubs slightly when turning still when people sit in the back.

I'm likely to take it into a panel beater next week and see what my options are, possibly move the plastic in further or maybe spacers? Advice? Pics coming.

    Pics of the wheels:

Pic of the bump thing (although this isn't the side that scrubs, this photo is of the right side, the left side which i have not uploaded yet has a bigger bump that rubs on the tyre when i turn right and someones sitting in the back) u can see it sticks out oddly and it's only on the right ride. See where on the back it's curved out.

I'm reallying hoping the panel beater can mould it in, the guys at Taleb used a simple heat gun and got it to move in a few millimeters but said a panel beater could do it better.

As its only scrubbing intermittently i'll assume its okay and i'll get it fixed asap.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you have purchased an incorrect tyre size for an 18inch rim on the Polo. Needs to be a 35 series tyre not a 40.

Oh man think i might cry lol.

I really expected the guys at Taleb to give me the right advice here.

Regardless, will I be able to fit a 35 series tyre on the wheels? Or will this involve stretching?

      As in 225/35/18?

Yeah your speedo will be out now, as you have changed your rolling circumference too much. You need a 35 profile tyre get your speedo corrected which is a bitch I've heard

but on a lighter note... once you get it sorted it will not scrub.

215 is tyre width in mm
35 is profile as a % of the width
18 is the inch diameter of the wheel

                  standard type size is?
what is the new wheel size compared to the old too... then it is simple mathematics to sort it out.

                    Stock is 17x7 on 215/40/17

New is 18x7.5 on 225/40/18 but scrubbing on left rear tyre.

I'm trying to work out what sized tyre to put on the new rims

Tyre Rolling Diameter is the most important and brand/make of tyre is also relative as some have slight differences even in same size. Of course too wide and scrubbing can also occur.

                        So do the maths...

                        Old Wheel Diameter = 431.8mm (17")
                        Tyre Profile = 40% of 215mm wide = 86mm
                        Tyre Rolling Diameter = 431.8mm + 172mm (2 Profiles) = 603.8mm

                        New Wheel Diameter = 457.2mm (18")
                        Tyre Profile = 40% of 225mm wide = 90mm
                        Tyre Rolling Diameter = 457.2mm + 180mm (2 Profiles) = 637.2mm

So your tyres are more than 30mm too big in diameter... this is a fn disgrace from a Tyreshop, depending on tyre brand and type

Get it fixed and the scrubbing will very likely go.

                        As for tyre width...

                        215mm wide is 8.46"
                        225mm wide is 8.85"

but rim width to tyre width is not quite the same.

Most tyre shops should now the exact diameter of each tyre size in each brand and type, this is what you need to make the right choice. My diameter figures are a guide as there is a tyre bead to worry about too.

                          So going by your calculations:

                          Tyre Rolling Diameter
                          215/40/17 = 603.8mm (original)
                          215/35/18 = 607.7mm (optimal)
                          225/35/18 = 614.7mm (alternative)
                          225/40/18 = 637.2mm (current)

Looks like I will ask if they can swap me with some 215/35/18 or maybe test 225/35/18. I hope they won't make me buy another set..

Get the 215/35/18. They should replace them.
