  • Help: Interior Lights Have Stopped Working

    VW Polo 2012

    This is what happened:
    1) Changed OEM interior bulbs to LEDs (5 front 2 back 1 boot)
    2) LEDs flicking with a little bit of light when switch is 'off' for middle front and back lights
    3) Daytime lights and rear lights stopped working
    4) Changed back to OEM interior bulbs
    5) No interior bulbs work anymore
    6) Checked all fuses (on top of battery and under steering wheel), replaced one blown fuse (daytime lights and rear lights working again)
    7) Interior lights still not working
If I put back LED lights, it works, except still has flicking issue.

Any ideas on how I can get the original bulbs working again?

If the bulb light is alight on the dash you may need to clear the fault codes to get it back to working properly.
Also the boot light has a tendency for the contacts to go loose and not hold the old bulb properly after you put in a after market globe.
There is also a diode in the boot light holder which can blow very easily causing the lights to flicker. You will need a multi meter to check it.
The led's will flicker on starting the car and they will slightly stay on all the time unless you replace one of the front bulbs with a normal bulb.

The lights everywhere else is fine (dash light is all good), will try the fault code clearing, can this really be the issue?

So this would be the last thing really?

I have already replaced all the 10am fuses just in case with no luck.

        Just a update:
        - I have put back all of the LED lights (5 front, 2 back, 1 boot)
        - I have replaced the blown fuse for the daylight/rearlight

        Now:
        - Daylight/rearlights working
        - interior lights all work (5 front, 2 back, 1 boot), however, the middle front and back do not work when on the 'lights on when door open mode' -> this is when the lights flicker, it is not full brightness, its a dim flickering light. whether or not key is in ignition or engine on or off.

No error of dash, so might as well keep the LEDs in, however, any ideas why they do not work for the 'door open' mode?
Is the voltage different between the 'on' and 'door open' mode? btw, works perfect when in the 'on' mode.

I had the same issue. Played around for ages. Had to try a combo of everything to get it to work. Clearing the stored fault helped in the end.

thanks for the help, will give that a shot.

i want to keep the LEDs in, they work, no errors on dash, only problem is that when on the 'lights on when door open' mode, it seems to go on half or quater power hence the flickering.
would clearing the fault be related to this?
            or is this something else.

I tried a similar thing in a T5 Transporter. With all interior lights changed to LED I had a light flicker in all lights when they are meant to be off.
I ended up leaving one standard globe in a step light and this was sufficient to get the CAN bus to switch off the lights.
There are LED's available that are set up to show the same resistance as a standard globe.

thanks! just bought the ross tech cable, about time i did.

haha, interesting, so leaving one standard globe in made it work.

would you happen to remember the fault codes you got for the interior lights before clearing?

                  worked!

had error codes related to the blown fuse, replaced fuse, cleared errors and lights functioning normal now.
