  • Cracked Rim - GTi

I have a GTi Polo and the last week I have had a slow leak.
A week to loose 10 lbs
Couldn't see any marks any where.
They are low profile tyres (40 series) but I haven't been smashing into potholes or anything

Anyway - pulled the wheel today, front passenger, and found the rim is cracked.

The car is 2 years old and done 22,000 kms.

Do you reckon it is damage I have done or do you reckon it is a rubbish rim I can claim on warranty

rims can be repaired, but I'd start with warranty.

I thought thats only to resurface or straighten?

Is there any damage on the tire?

Don't suppose the VW dealer sold you Rim Insurance by any chance?
Warranty would be my first bet. Hell, I wouldn't even mention the crack - just that you don't see anything wrong with the tyre
If you have that Rim Insurance, I don't think it costs much to make a claim.

Sorry. What do you mean rim insurance?
              I am thinking warranty

Unless someone can tell me rims are not covered by warranty

Why would wheels be covered by a warranty?
Wheels are a consumable and damageable item and you can't prove it was their negligence that caused it.

Best bet would be to buy a new wheel off someone who is upgrading to other wheels.

A lot of guys on Briskoda have had their rims replaced due to corrosion (a known fault, though not always acknowledged by their local dealer), so it's worth a try for warranty.

Agree, it's just like trying to claim warranty on the rear cup holder of a Tiguan... Not gonna happen mate.

It cost me $400 at the time I bought the car, and covers me for 3 years, up to $375 for punctures or blow outs to tyres (up to $750/y) and rims (up to $1100/y) No excess when claiming. If you bought this, you may be cheering.

Tyres aren't covered by VW, but may be covered by the manufacturer warranty (according to the VW Website)
Whilst they aren't clear on rims on the website, they are clear on damage from impacts, which is what they may consider this.

Without knowing how much cracks like that cost to repair, it might be worth having VW look at the car with the intent of having it fixed under warranty, but if they charge you service fees and decline to fix it you may be out of pocket.

                        Why would it be covered??

The more I look at it there is no damage - only the crack

tyres are not covered - there is no mention of wheels

Yes - it mentions misuse and damage.
but there is no damage - just a crack on the inside.

Warranties < Technology & Service < Volkswagen Australia

If I have hit a pot hole that would have resulted in damage, the tyre would be shot and there should be a dent in the rim - not just a crack.

Anyway - I will see tomorrow when I contact the dealer.

If the crack is caused by hitting a pothole then it's on the driver but as there is no impact fracture or other scuff marks visible on the tyre & no mark on the rim, I'd venture it might be a manufacturing defect. Warranty on a mfr defect is fair enough.
