About to purchase a used polo gti 2011 but with all the recent news about recalls, I'm getting a little worried. Have driven the car and DSG seems fine. Had a mkv Jetta TFSI with the stuttering DSG so I know how it felt like. Also didn't seems to have any squeky seats. Anything else I should have looked out for? Also wanted to ask around about eh 30k service price in Brisbane and surrounds as the car has now done 33k. Hope that doesn't void the warranty. Any advice is much appreciated

That will not void the warranty at all mate, so long as you follow the 30,000km service schedule you will be fine.

Do not worry about the 'recent news' the whole thing has been blown out of proportion by The Age, I have no doubt VW will soon look for reimbursement, as The Age have now gone from the angle that it was the 'VOLKSWAGENS CAR FAULT" to now the truck drivers fault, they are completely hopeless and will do anything to sell the rubbish they print. I've only ever encountered one Polo GTI with a shuddering issue, ofcourse it was fixed with a new clutch pack and it never came back again for that issue - although they still use the same 7 speed DSG so it is not impossible for them to have a shudder, but VW are very generous with the DSG warranty as you probably already know.

I would ensure the car has been looked after correctly, not thrashed, ensured that the owner has put PREMIUM fuels throughout the cars life and ensure you do the same aswell. Get it inspected at a local VW dealer or specialist or RACQ or some well known inspection company, they can give you a better insight of how 'good' the car actually is. Generally how well presented it is and the service books show a clear indication of how the car is like.

Goodluck mate, Polo GTI's are one awesome car.

If you buy the 1.4 Twin charge, there is a risk (how high or low only you can decide) that it will:
1 - drink oil in an unhealthy way, needing to have parts replaced, engine work or the engine changed (under or outside of warranty)
2 - show symtoms of the DSG issues discussed elsewhere (seem to be a few different issues). if you have an issue outside of warranty, you could be up for some huge coin to get it fixed / replaced (none of the DSG issues i've read about are cheap to fix)

This is worst case scenario stuff. Id want to try to understand why is someone selling a 2 year old car that may have had issues. Have they had any issues? Can you call VW to find out what they know about it? There is also the problem that you might buy a perfectly good car that no-one will touch in a year as DSG is a filthy swear (due to the media and known issues). This unfortunately is a market sentiment concern, so the more we discuss the issues, the more negative the market is on the car.

Unfortunately its pretty difficult to know if its a flawless version or one that is going to have new issues or issues as the fault is not being fixed but symptoms temporarily removed. No car has 0 risk

Re: Polo GTI 6R 2011 Advice

          Is the breather mod visible?

No 30k service always a good excuse to talk down the price.
Why is it 3k late, obviously desperate to sell so start with a low ball offee

Is this the red one on carsales?

Car is stock without any mods. Only had 15k service done less than a year ago but hasn't had it's 30k done. Also tyres changed to rotalla cheapos for road worthy. Sale is apparently due to financial reasons and not any issues with the car. I'm just trying to sort out how much the servicing will cost, also making sure warranty isn't void due to the late service and also need to find out what the steps are in buying a financed car

If car financed you make payment amount owing to finance company directly with bank cheque and remaining amount to owner.
only way ive ever done it

Breather mod is done by VW if engine uses oil. I havent seen one so dont know how it differs from stock.

that would be my first warning light, why is the car not had a serviced at 30 000 km, i think i payed about $ 600, if its because of the money then you really cant know the car has always had good 98 fuel in it, unless you get it for cheep cheep ( like a steel).

i to love my polo but i have had it from new and got a ok one. but I did try selling it and the money that i was offered was not worth it. i think they knew the polo Gti's are lemons.

1 year old car i was offered half the price ( it was still stock then)

the car is worth more as a track car to me in the future than the money they offered and i know i will have to add a different gear box in it in the future. and i have used 5.5 L of oil in 50 000 Km.

would i choose a polo Gti again no i would get some thing stronger like a Golf GTI or R that's older but the same price.

i think VW had the right idea with the polo but used to much tec that was un tested in the real world.

I haven't had any problems with mine, in it's 30,000km history. I myself have had it for half of those km's and not a problem, just the occasional top up of oil (twice in 15,000km its been topped up). Its a brilliant little car.

So they have put over 15,000kms on the car in less than 12 months, fried the tyres as well (I got 42,000kms with still 2mm front and 3mm rear of tread on my GTI factory tyres) and replaced with cheap crap tyres, are currently 3000kms over due on a the first major service which is a brakes service as well and they are selling under the premise of "nothing wrong"?

If you want to check the clutches in it (which I highly recommend) there is a very simple process of doing this.

Contrary to comments by The One, replacing the clutches after the initial shuddering is a band aid fix, they will do it again. It's inevitable. Don't look here for examples because the cars still don't have many kms on them (a few of us do though but mostly highway kms) but look in the golf areas and you will see some 118tsi owners onto their 3rd clutch pack in less than 100,000kms.

Yes there is a lot of media hype around at the minute but recalls across the globe and warranty extensions should speak for themselves as many of us already knew before the media (finally) got involved.

Check for the breather pipe mod by pulling the engine cover off and record the part number, then search here for the part number. In fact, check the relevant TPI in the stickies area and that will tell you what to look for.

If its been replaced, you will potentially have a bad oil burner.

Also listen and feel for misfires as spark plugs and coilpacks can be temperamental in these cars as well.

Check the tailgate for black smudgy soot as well, this will also hint to burning oil.

Yea I know it sounds rather dodgy but looks like the owner is selling due to financial reasons. I did manage to bargain the price down but still am not a 100% confident. As for the oil burning, didn't notice soot at the back but it's a black car and also didn't pull off the engine cover but doubt he's done any of that as it's only been to the VW workshop once for it's 15k service. Been trying to contact jmac as he's the only vw mechanic I know personally but have not gotten a reply yet.

Also just noticed the recall today and the owner isn't sure if the car is part of it. Looks like I'm getting more warnings than encouragement regarding the car.

About the tyres, the seller lives in a suburb with loads of roundabouts. Have a mate living there too and his R32 tyres had to be changes twice in 80k (3 sets in total).

Do yourself a favour and contact the local VW service centre and see if there is any warranty work logged in the system for the car.
