It's for a fire extinguisher. IIRC, German road laws require a fire extinguisher for any car travelling on Autobahns. I imagine just about all German/European cars have a similar arrangement.

I don't know the exact rule, but I believe it's above a certain speed, cars must carry a fire extinguisher.

The Fire Extinguisher is a VW accessory, but can be purchased through Revolution Racegear too.

I haven't seen a genuine VW Fire Extinquisher, would have thought it would need a solid mount though and not a strap.

We can get them here, they're just not commonly sold. Might be standard kit on something like a CC or the commercial vans, but not sure.

First Aid Kit, part # VWA008
Fire bomb, part # 3D0 860 277 - it's 1kg bomb. But check Revolution Racegear, Quell and Lifeline may have similar, and cheaper (VW OEM is likely to be up around $6 to 700
