    What's Making This Noise?

If the injector is performing badly enough no dpf will stop it smoking. I spent a lot of time stripping down and putting hilux diesels back together. Granted modern injection is more complex (read, dangerous. I saw the resultant photos of a toyota tech crossing a common rail injection system the wrong way. He is now known as 'lefty') but it is fundamentally the same. High pressure fuel delivered by a spring loaded injector into a cylinder that due to the high level of compression ignites the fuel. In fact, I'd hazard a guess to say that with the software now loaded into these modern diesels they are easier than ever to work on because there are less things to line up and time correctly and adjust. It's all done with the click of a mouse instead.
    I digress!

Just try it and see. And don't let your parents and sister wait, get it looked at immediately, especially if its an easily reproducible problem. There are known faults with vw diesel injectors and the dealership won't tell you that until you ask what the sticker is on the inside of the drivers door.
Ok well I've never noticed any smoke come out the back, but I haven't ever really looked...
I'll push them as hard as I can for them to get it looked at, but if they need to keep it for more than a day then problems arise – my sister is under 25 so the stealership won't let her use a loan car.
    We will see...

    Thanks.

I'm 20 and they let me use the loan cars. You just have to make them aware that you are a P plater and they up the insurance excess

I'm 19 and on my Green P's and the dealers never have a problem with loaning me a car. In fact, the last loan car I had, they gave me a brand new 2012 118TSI Golf with 80ish kilometers on the clock! Haha

Nomad is right though, just let them know if a P Plater will be driving and they make the necessary adjustments to the excess.

How did you go with asking the dealer about the your noise concerns?

It's stopped making the noise so we haven't bothered (not that we've had any time). The next service is booked in for next Friday and I'll ask them about it then.

I think maybe it was doing a DPF regeneration and it tends to make crappy noises when it does – it's just never sounded quite as bad.

                What's Making This Noise?

Just a quick update on this:

The car is booked in for this Friday for a service and some warranty issues including:
                - Engine noise
                - Engine stalls when active regeneration of the DPF is occurring while in neutral (coasting up to an intersection) leading to a loss of power steering and assisted brakes.
                - Vacuum hoses need to be replaced
                - Passenger side rear door seal is cracked and needs replacing
                - Luggage compartment light does not work

The car isn't going to be driven until the service just in case something goes wrong on the road and we've borrowed a friend's Alfa Romeo Brera until it's fixed.

                Alex.

                  What's Making This Noise?

Ok, 879 dollars later, the 60,000 km service was done today.

They fixed the vacuum hoses and door seal, gave it a good clean inside and out and had a look at the issues we asked them about.
For the rough running and stalling while in neutral, they did exactly what I thought they'd do: "Completed scan of the electrical systems to reveal no codes in the systems; Road tested the vehicle to reveal no abnormal operation of the vehicle; Recommend at least replacing the engine air filter"
Yeah, thanks for fixing that VW

For the boot light not working, they said: "Tested the boot light to confirm the issue, adjusted the contacts of the bulb holder to rectify the issue; Customer monitor the concern and contact the service dept if concern arises again in the future"
Got home (mum didn't check at the dealership because she was late to an appointment) and opened the boot, guess what? IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!! They had the car from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and they obviously didn't even bother to check if their 'fix' had worked. Thanks again, VW!

They also recommended replacing the windscreen wipers (which are working absolutely perfectly) for 83 dollars, replacing the tyres, and replacing the air filter for 61 dollars. Oh, and the rear brake pads – 224 dollars (we won't get them done at VW)

Other than that, the standard 60,000 km stuff like brake fluid and fuel filter etc.

We will be going back on Saturday to let them know about the boot light still not working.

                  Edit: updated to correct price

Strange. I would have thought VW dealers would be trying extra hard to provide good customer service at the moment.

Just got back from the stealership. They changed the air filter in about 5 mins and booked it in for July the 1st for the boot light not working and climatronic dimming issue.
They said to fix the boot light they would probably need to replace the lock as it's not properly talking to the car's computer.
Turns out the air filter was only $45 which isn't too bad.

They also mentioned that they've been absolutely flat-out since the recall was announced.

                            UPDATE

As I thought it would, the car has started to stall and run rough again. We took it into VW last week to tell them about it – mum even did the whole "I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to my daughter, especially on the freeway" which I think made them really want to fix it. Apparently one of the apprentices took it for a drive last time and didn't even know what he was looking out for so they assumed the car was running normally. This time the service manager took it for a drive when it was cold and he got it to stall and run like crap, and he said it was the injectors at fault (surprise, surprise...) so today we've dropped the car off for them to fix the boot light properly, replace all four injectors, fix the climatronic display and do a forced regen of the DPF (clogged from over-fuelling due to faulty injector(s) They are keeping the car for two days so they better do it properly this time!
Even when we were driving it to VW this morning it stalled coming up to a roundabout and someone almost rear-ended us!

OT: You can tell VW is **** scared now because of the recall – their customer service has improved almost freakishly since a fortnight ago.

                            Alex.

given their inability to fix the issue when raised, i wouldn't say your last comment was OT at all, and quite relevant given that you nearly got hit up the backside on the way to the dealership.

                                I reckon it is this:

                                ratelende dash stationair -> OPLOSSING!

I had this on a petrol but it only occurred on idle with air con off, it also came and went, it was basically the fuel line rattling against the chasis. When I isolated the source, I could make the noise come and go by moving the fuel line back and forth.

I'm 95% sure as the noise sounds exactly like what I had.

I'd imagine it is the same with the diesel.

You can either move the line to the second mounting point, or cable tie the fuel line to stop it from moving out of position.

*** EDIT: o well if you have driving issues then yeah it would be more serious ***
