Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 - anyone had any experience with them on a 6R GTi?
I'm looking at putting them on mine eventually, but for $1100 for the set I want to be sure that they're worth the investment..
That was my tyre of choice until I realised the 215/40r17 only has a load rating of 83. There is a new 'R Spec' version of this tyre out in Japan right now which is reviewed in the below link.

Does not matter - I don't think they have a tyre in the Golf size range with the required 91/92 load rating
Yokohama make the AD08 (and AD08R) in the following sizes:
A3, Octavia, Golf
205/55 R16 91V
225/45 R17 91W
235/40 R18 91W - these cannot be fitted on stock 7.5 J x 18 wheels, but otherwise, an alternative to fitting 225/40 R18 88W
Got the wheel spin figured out. Try this in all your Polo's. It worked for me. Put into sport mode turn off traction control. Go for your life. No wheel spin at all

Yeahhh not really mate, i drive a trendline and i still get wheel spin in S mode
So im prettty sure GTI owners are getting alot more than me
MY11 Polo Trendline, Candy white RCD510, R badge, AP X coilovers, 17" Ariettas in gloss black, Rear muffler delete, GTI pedal covers, gloss back emblems
soon to come, Front lip & Fat bottom steering wheel

I am not sure you can actually turn off traction control as it is part of the ESP which is required by law in some states now. What it may do is change traction control mapping, but in the end, the laws of physics are something that cannot be overridden. They cannot be waived and "verdicts" cannot be appealed
With the polos you can disable the traction control - which will allow a wheel to spin freely and not attempt to regain grip by reducing throttle or shifting to a higher gear ratio but you cannot disable the ESP (electronic stability programme)
From what I can tell in mine disabling traction control will raise the threshold to when the ESP kicks in so if you really throw the car around it will kick in but under heavy cornering it won't (where the normal program will kick in just doing a U turn)
Bit of a thread revive but tonight I had a strange experience (just wondering if it's normal).
I was at a set of lights with some empty road in front of me, a warm engine and wanting to have a bit of a grin so I put the car in manual mode and went for a nice fast takeoff. I wanted to hear that DSG fart so I held first until about 5500 rpm and shifted. At this point previously the car has shifted nicely although sometimes I've seen the traction control light flash briefly. This time however the second I shifted there was a big thump noise and the traction control light was flashing, I also seemed to have severely reduced power for a second or two and so I aborted my takeoff.
I tried a much more gentle launch just after with traction control turned off and no problems, The car didn't give me any issue the rest of the drive, so I'm hoping all the happened was the DSG tried for a nice hard gear change, managed to spin the wheels up quite badly at which point traction control stepped in and took all my power briefly. I was just surprised by how hard the thump was, felt like something had gone horribly wrong and had me worried...
Car is pretty new, about 800km on the clock so the tyres aren't bald or anything.
It may not be tramp (remember tramp is usually continuous) but it does sound like something I have had which is related to the DSG works and the stupid way it ****s.
When the engine hits the redline the gearbox automatically shifts up to the next gear (which I absolutely hate with a passion) so what would have happened is you take off in first, the wheel looses traction and as a result the revs skyrocket to the redline (which isn't helped by the fact that 1st is a very short gear). The gearbox forces a gear change but when it does the change in the split second, the car will usually gain traction again and as a result it slams it into second gear. When the gearbox slams the clutch it will usually reduce tourqe as a preventative measure which gives you lag.
Really annoying and I would assume its really bad for the gearbox (I have done it twice and I still cringe thinking about it).
Wet weather is usually the problem as you can manage to keep it slipping. Dry weather isn't to bad as it takes a lot more to keep a continuous wheel spin.
Yeah, my thoughts too, asper what happened the other night to me, exactly the same situation and if the engine doesn't have enough power/torque to overcome the tyre grip at the point it time, it compounds the situation. Best thing to remember is that for hard launches, turn the traction control off and hope that you get it just right because otherwise you will get either horrible axle tramp (which is a constant bang, bang, bang) or wheelspin. Tendency on this chassis (all the way back to mk4 golf) is horrid axle tramp rather than wheelspin. Buggered if I know why they have persisted with this setup, considering how quickly bushes etc wear out as well....
Yeah I think in this case rather than help the traction control is causing problems. Seeing as you're already pulling away in a spirited manner you may as well be ready to regulate the throttle if the wheels spin. Also from what I hear wheel hop/axle tramp is better if you spin the wheels more, the traction control might actually be causing it by limiting slip.
