    Hey guys

    How is everyone?

I have been browsing through the forums after the purchase of my VW Polo GTI 2011 model. It looks like alot of people have issues with the DSG gearbox. What exactly goes wrong with it? The car stops working? Is there any signs for the DSG gearbox to stop working.

As of now the car I love. It is quick, fuel efficient and just overall a great car. The DSG only has a very minor issue. When I go up hilly roads and I do not give it much acceleration it very minor under-revs and makes the car a bit shaky like it would with any manual gearbox.

Is there anything else I should know about these cars? I was on a high after I bought the Polo GTI and now I am not quite so sure with everyone making me feel nervous

Hi osman, welcome to the forums. What that sounds like is the mechatronics having a reluctance to change down a gear either due to software or. Faulty unit, OR the clutch is shuddering due to the typical vw faulty hold pressure program under load which will be ruining your clutch.

The best advice I can give with and DSG is this.

Don't ever drive it in D because contrary to popular opinion, I believe the true designation of the letters are as follows. S is Stupid, M is Maybe-Manual and D is Destroy

Use those wheel paddles, it's more fun and will extend the life of your clutch packs.

        Thanks for the advice mate.

Shall I give VW a call tommorow about this issue before it gets worse? Still under factory warranty. Even if they end up fixing the issue wont it happen all over again or have they fixed the problem?

For spirited driving I use the paddles. But for the daily commute I use D and occasionally S. Touch wood, I've had no problems with the mech or clutches. I tend to agree that keeping the revs high may help the oil burning issues but use more petrol. Since they fixed the breather hose I've had no oil issues, that was more than a year ago......as I said, touch wood.

Would you consider these issues enough you wouldn't buy the car in the first place though? As someone looking into one, you all made me a bit concerned...

I wouldn't have bought mine if I was buying now. That being said, enigne wise mine has been faultless.

The car, in my opinion, is still the best bang for buck car at the moment and really fun to drive. It still brings a smile to my face.

Would I buy one now with the inconsistent problems people have reported? probably not.

I have been following this forum since 2011. I read all the issues, I knew all the problems. I took out a 6 year warranty.

The way I look at it is, I love this car. Nothing in the market suited what I wanted, fuel economy and performance.

I know lots of people who have had issues with all sorts of parts on this car, but I'll consider myself very lucky. Even still if there were any issues, that's what warranty is for. Sure it'll be frustrating, but I'll be given a loan car, I really don't care! (IMO)

Besides the typical oil consumption issues (which we now seem to understand it's how the car is driven), my car hasn't ever broken down on me. I've done 25,000kms since July 2012, best car to drive around town and country, and so cheap to run.

Enjoy it, don't stress over the issues!

I'm the same as fastlane. It was the best car for my budget that's quick, economical and comfortable. Only issue with the car is the oil and now that it seems to be under control (fingers crossed), I love it more than ever. Just run it hard
The DSG takes some practice to get used to. Pretty much treating it as a manual transmission works for me and it's been smooth with no shudder.

Everyone has been a great help for me.

I called VW and told them about the shudder issues. My polo has done approx 19,000 km. They said they'll take a look at it on Monday. Lets see what happens ill keep you guys updated.

I've decided after all these comments I will only be driving the polo gti in manual. Sorry I am such a newbie but to do that I am guessing you put the gear stick in D and push it towards your left where the + - signs are and you can shift with the gear stick and flaps on the wheel. Is that correct?

And also when driving in manual is it better if you shift down as well or let the computer automatically do that for you ?

                      Thanks

I have found if you drive it like you own it Not like you stole it you will have a lot less problems

                          Just drive it.

Occasionally the DSG will get in a mood and be a little jumpy in D or S for that matter. My old Golf and my current Polo GTI have done it. I recall seeing other people mention here also, that giving it a bit of "exercise" in S or manual usually makes them relax again. I know it's how mine behaves.

I have said this before, but don't get paranoid. If you want to sit there and listen for every noise or every fumbled gear change to have something to worry about...you will find something. But if you do that you won't be able to appreciate how great these things are 99% of the time and that the quirks are relatively minor in most cases and what bigger issues there are... comparable ones can be found in any other car you could buy as well.

Could not agree more with fastlane.

I realise I am a very new owner (done 800ks only) and maybe I have been lucky so far with no oil use, no rattles in fact everything is bloody perfect - like many owners, many of who I suspect do not post on this forum, I love this car!

I drive 80% in D (dumb) with no issues with the DSG. If I was silly enough to give it a boot full while doing 3km/h in D2 then I expect I could get shudder.

Please note that I am not knocking this forum, quite the opposite - I have learned heaps from its members - THANK YOU.
