Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Has anyone Tuned the new CTH engine?

    Hi guys.
I'm booked with Apr to try and tune the new Gti CTH engine.
Just wondering as anyone successfully tuned this engine?

Can't see why it'd be any different to the CAVE, they are the same design just re-designed pistons/rings aren't they?
Either way it'll be good to see the results

Being sold as the same car? Dual charge? Can't imagine the numbers will differ much.
Hopefully the biggest numbers you'll notice is the lack of L's of oil required to keep it moving.

I spoke with Guy from APR and they have not successfully been able to tune one yet. I am going down to try and do it in two stages. Pull the software details for the engine and ecu and send it to APR USA for their opinion and then go back a week later to install the tune if they say it will work.

It will be a bummer if they can't as I want to put the exhaust on also. Either way I will install the CAI and intercooler.
I don't know if the other tuners have cracked it yet either Viezu or others.

Sounds like a change to the ECU, trouble getting in / being undetected.

All are detectable, I believe that the latest iteration of the MED17.5.5 'anti tune' ecu is installed with the CTHE motor.

Damn! I didn't even consider that my MY13 GTI couldn't take a tune. What a crock... Too many lawyers getting a say at car companies these days.

There is murmurs about several aftermarket parts companies investigating legal sanctions against VGA specifically due to their warranty statements regarding the use of non-genuine parts, this also extends to tuning companies....

Don't worry spoke with Guy again today. It will be able to be tuned. It may be a couple of weeks to a month away. It will be the same tune as the CAVE engine. They just need to sort the encryption on the new ecu. It was the same when the audi A3 came out and they can now tune that car. I'll let you know more after the have my car on Wednesday.

That sounds a bit more promising. I'm tipping Guy will have cracked the ECU encryption before I rustle up the $$ for a tune anyway!

Went to HP in Brisbane and they tried to tune the new ecu. The processor has been upgraded from previous engine. Mark said APR USA will have to reverse engineer the new ecu (brake the encryption). Then all good for a tune. 1-2 month wait so not long now.
Mark and James were awesome and couldn't be more helpful. James took me for a spin in their Polo GTI. What a great car.
Got CAI installed today and when they give the green light I'm booked for a DSG tune and ECU tune and Intercooler.

Lots of promises and it's always "another 2 months" - that started 6 months ago for me at a local APR agent!

If you can afford the approx. $800 extra over the APR tune I can confidently recommend the ABT Sportsline module. Before I had it fitted I doubted youtube video claims by 2 or 3 European Polo GTI owners, with the ABT module fitted, claiming 0 - 100 km/h times of around 5.5 secs, I'm not doubting these claims now. Big advantage over other tunes is the VW computer does not need to be opened up and the ABT module takes over ALL the tuning parameters.

In the next few weeks I hope to post my own video of a 0 - 100km/hour run.

5.5 secs with tune only? Surely that can't be.. Otherwise it's pretty damn good value

I hope it's true but logic seems to be a strong advocate against such a claim. APR with their full Polo 6R kit featured in a 2011 FWD shootout does 0-100 is 5.9s. Chip tune, CAI, intercooler, full exhaust, tyres and a bunch of handling stuff was thrown in to achieve this figure.
