Gavs, it's not just the R8. Most of the facelift Audis coming out will have LED headlights as options. They are really trying to push the envelope here.

I know, I was just using as the example.

lunchboxGTI, that just shows one reason as to why aftermarket HID conversion kits, no matter how expensive, are not worth the hassle. The best ones are the ones designed by the multi-billion dollar company that spends years on products and has all the approvals etc.

Yes, although it isn't mandatory for manufacturers to fit them (assuming the Beetle is using the new D8S bulbs), they may choose to do so anyway.

Why do they need washers? Do they wash automatically? Do people use them manually if they aren't looking through the dirty glass? If it's just a washer without a wiper does it actually clean or just wet the headlight?

I think it sprays the headlights every second or third time you spray the windscreen. I assume the jet is powerful enough to remove most of the crap on the headlight cover so yeah...

They have washers to prevent the dirt, dust and grime creating excess glare from the Xenons high lumen output. The cleaners are just a high pressure jet that blows most of the stuff off. Bugs that have dried on though will not come off...

The manual says every 5th time

The ADR Rules state that washers and self leveling is mandatory for lights above a certain light output I think it 2000 lumens????

So if your lights are below that they would be legal if not No they arent

I also read they may only be installed in vehicles of which a model has HID as standard.

So you couldnt legally put them in a Mk2 Cortina for instance as no Cortina ever had them.

Just as a follow up, the Subaru XV does have xenon lights in reflector housings BUT they also have auto leveling (as per the ADR) and headlight washers, again, as per the ADR.
